Is it exactly that? Is rating a story One Star better than not rating it at all, or does it work against the author?
In which case, a 3 Star rating wouldn't move the average up or down? I always like to rate. That way, the story is marked 'as read'
Unless you have 9-FIVES and need 10 votes for the fives to matter. In that scenario a ONE actually lifts the 4.50 average a tidge higher.

JBJ has a point there - you need ten votes and at least 4.5 to get that red "H", so in that one situation any vote at all might be better than none.
A rating lower than the average will drop the average; a rating higher than the average will pull it up. Most stories average higher than 3, so a 3 will pull them down.

Sure. Nine 5's = 45, nine 5's plus one 1=46/10=4.60 Amazing how it works.
I actually did have that happen on one of my story chaptersI was really hoping they wouldn't do the sweep and get rid of my trolling 1-bomb which had given me a red H!

Make that 10th vote anything more than one and youre good to go with sweeps.
I've noticed that all kinds of votes get swept off. Some people will do a 2- or even 3-bomb on a story; they have figured out that anything under 5 will usually knock it out of its red H, and they think only 1s get picked up in the sweeps. I've had 2s and 3s swept off my scores. (There is sometimes so little voting on my stories because of the category or other reasons, that I can see exactly which votes have been cleaned off.)
The main thing to warn your friends and allies about, is that if they rush on and vote without actually reading the storyit will get swept off. The length of time the browser page is open seems to be one of the sweeping criteria. So, please READ and vote, LOL.
(This does mean that if you read, go away to think about your vote, then come back to cast it quickly, you may be in danger of it getting swept off.)
