ONE reason you shouldn't swimm in lakes ,ponds, creeks

i'm sorry.. i cant help but laugh at that....

but if it makes you feel any better... i get a weird rash from swimming in ponds/lakes and so on

Leaches can get you whether you're clothed or naked. And, not all rivers and lakes have 'em!

Very true about the clothes.

I heard about this guy participating in an eco chalenge who got in some water and a leech swam up his penis. doctor told him to drink lots and piss it out which he did!

I don't know.

I used to go camping quite a bit and swam in lakes and rivers all the time. Never had one leach. It definately depends on where you go. My suggestion is that if there are quite a few other people swimming there, its probably safe. Though that's not a certainty, of course.

That reminds me, anyone ever see stand by me? It was on the telli a couple of days ago, and it was great film. Look out for it if you haven't seen it yet.

I, too, have swam in MANY rivers and lakes over the years. Maybe Nebraska does not have leaches? <~~I don't believe this one is true, though. Some were designated swimming areas made by camping sites, and some weren't. Perhaps I have just always been lucky? I've never once had a tick on me from being in wooded areas either.

Those are the best places to swim. I did my share of skinny dipping in the ponds and lakes growing up and had the time of my life. And it wasn't leeches I was worried about trying to attach themselves to me.:p

 That's it. I'm wearing a protective cup WHENEVER I'm in the water from now on.

I'm from the UK, considering the weather, we don't swim in lakes and ponds here because important parts of one's anatomy freeze and drop off.

:(

One of my favorites. It is a great film. Too bad River Phoenix is no longer living, he would of had a great career.

Never had a leech on me from whenever I'd go swimmming, but I have had ticks from the woods. But hell, thats all part of growing up in the country! ;)

Hi All

...and don't use chemical toilets, either!

I heard a girl on radio tell this tale, which was about her :D

She was camping in a field near a farm, and the chemical toilet was in the barn. She didn't really want to use it, but eventually had to, so she crept out in the night to the bar.

It was dark in there, and she only had a lighter in her jeans pocket, so she decided, after a quick look around, to use it quickly and get right out of there.

After the Call of Nature was over, she grabbed a wad of toilet paper, quickly wiped, and found the toilet paper was very cold and slimy!!!!! She grabbed the lighter, flicked it on - and a very stunned slug was seen hanging onto the wad of paper :D

She screamed loud and long... :D

EEEEEWWWW! I HATE SLUGS!

Nasty little slimy grody things! Pour salt on them all and watch
them melt!

Yucky yucky yucky!

Ewwwwwwwwwww styphon - yechh

We have a lot of lakes in my area - on behind the house -- it is a nice spring fed lake - used to swim it in all the time as a kid but I wouldn't now because pollution and run off have ruined it. Also around here (ORlando) you have to be careful swimming in the lakes in the summertime because bacteria that causes encephalitis gets really bad in the lakes around here.

The Little Black Suckers!!!

For a couple of summers I worked in a tackle & bait shop. We sold them all! leeches, worms, helgramites (Dragonfly larve) minnows & froggies.

The leeches were the LEAST of my worries:eek: I was stung by helgramites more than a dozen times! They are formidable little creatures, let me tell ya. Fast as cobras and have wicked bad tempers. LOL

The leeches were my most FAVORITE:) I got sooo good at freaking the fishermen out. I could put my arm in at certain depths and have one dozen or six dozen attched depending on how deep I put my arm in and how long I kept it in there! I would then pull my leech covered arm outta the tank and flick the little suckers off into the container:cool:

I WAS the leech chick! LOL

I hated selling the froggies:( I banned the use of them in MY fishing boat and had Rose do all the dealing with them at the shop, even though they were the BEST fer bass fishing!

They Require really soft skin ta get a drink and mostly deal up with already open wounds ta eat.

HEY! I actually typed that without ALL starting with CAPS!

:p
