Looking at street view on Google maps of many other countries, especially in Europe, the amount of graffiti, "tags," etc, is shocking.

In the US, at least in Southern California there is far less vandalism and graffiti than there was when I was growing up. Its one of those things you don't even appreciate until you see it somewhere else.

While there is still some of course, the authorities do a good job with rapid reaction to paint over it these days, as well as stronger penalties for the vandals who get caught.

It really does improve quality of life not having to see this ugly crap everywhere. Its a shame Europe and other countries don't do something about this.

But... you didn't grow up in southern California, you grew up in Russia (so how would you know)

That is an interesting statistic though. I've always likened it to a matter of civic pride. The more people feel invested in their community, and have a voice in their community, the more pride they will have in their community. And the more pride in their community the less likely they will be to crap their own bed by spraypainting garbage all over it. This is a combination of economic factors as well; more employment means more income, which means less time for hooliganism and more money to spend in their community.

I was talking to a copper yesterday in Larne. He told me drink driving arrests are down about 90%.
