I was 3rd seat A team in my high school chess club. You might think we were a bunch of geeks. Well, some where, but six out of ten currupted the other four.
Free to do just about anything, because for the most part we were under the radar. We went to the state turnament the three years I was no the team.
We didn't were sport jackets unless the turnament was held at our school. We looked like hold overs from the sixties. Long hair, african-styled shirts (dashiki), Levis, and Chuck Taylors.
When we walked out on other campuses, no one questioned us, because we had the topped ranked team. What we were doing was smoking joints the size of cigars, the cuban type.
The only people who really knew we were on the chess team was those people who listened to the Monday morning announcements, which wasn't many. They would call out our names and ranking in the USCF. Nobody knew what the hell it was about. Our sponsor (a teacher) didn't care what we did, most of the time he was trying to become a better chess player.
All our parties were packed with students who wouldn't normally speak to each other. Being in the south and all. We always had plenty of smoke and drink.
The assistant principle loved us, because on our consistant winning record. We had a "Get out of Class Free" card. We got away with more stuff than cheerleaders, because the assistant principle was in our pockets.
We use to go to Pensacola Beach, FL while everyone were in class. Don't you know, girls loved that. By the way, my high school was in Mobile, AL
