Officer May Jeong sat in her patrol car. Her pulse was racing, her stomach in knots. First day nerves. She was on her first solo shift. It was traffic duty, speeding and such but it was still her first time alone.
The radio called out though nothing was close to her. Her car was parked off the road, under an underpass. Speeding cars were easy to catch here. The road was straight and drivers often thought themselves safe to go faster than the limit.
Nervously, she picked at her uniform pants. She scolded herself and turned her eyes back on the road.
"Just breathe. You got this. Been working for years just for this chance." She focused her breathing. Meditation was something she enjoyed and she found it helped her anxiety. It helped her focus and get to work. Years of studying, work, good grades, top of her class...she had tricks to keep her mind sharp and emotions pushed down.
A strict father didn't hurt either.
May reached for her cup of green tea. She grimaced finding it colder than she liked. The car itself was quieter than she expected. She wondered how long it would be before she started talking to herself. She rolled her eyes at her own stupidity. Hadn't she just been doing that?
Her eyes scanned the cars that passed, disappointed that everyone seemed to be on their best behaviour today.
