I've been hung up on one genre of reading for about two years now and need a change. I would like to know what book you think is a must read before you die and why ?
Thank you.....:)

The phone book.

It's the greatest story ever told.
Read it , I was in it.. I'm somebody. Funny though I didn't see your name.....;)

the complete works of mark twain if you haven't read them all. some great commentaries such as "letters from the earth".

for some fun, light and humorous reading try anything by kinky friedman.

Tanx unclej I was starting to to think no one reads.....

I was horrified when I found out that none of my students had read "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe" by CS Lewis.

Other than that, I've enjoyed rereading The dream trilogy by Nora Roberts (Daring to Dream, Keeping the Dream, Holding the Dream)

More serious fiction? "the importance of being earnest" by Oscar Wilde

Non-fiction "I know why the caged bird sings" by Maya Angleou

Sorry...I'm a bibliophile...I'm not capable of replying with just one book

Hard to give you titles if we don't know what to avoid.

Good point... Mystery and autobiography......

Read "A Prayer for Owen Meany" By John Irving.

not great literature, but funny and somewhat thought provoking...

Do Not Read "The Stand" by Stephen King....At least not While everyone is talking about SARS

Ok, I'll give ya a serious answer now, lol.

Here's 5:

Robert Pirsig - Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance
John M. Del Vecchio - The 13th Valley
Dean Koontz - Strangers (it's different from his other crap)
Ernest Hemingway - The Sun Also Rises (just read it again, awfully powerful book)
Nicholas Sparks - The Notebook (you'll cry your eyes out, lol)

It's one of the few books by King I actually like... the rest are mostly like watching a made for TV movie... same formula different faces...

Read Deepthroat by Linda Lovelace, it blew my mind

The Alchemist by Paulo Coehelo
I may have messed up the author's name, but its an easy read and very heartwarming.

I'm saving the serious replies because I'm being sincere.I can get through a good book in a few days, but there will be a lot to choose from. Of those 5 which would you pick up first ?? And why ? Going to the library tommorrow..

I was gonna recommend The Stand, also. Excellent book, but, yeah, certainly not a book you'd wanna be reading, now. I'd also recommend Watchers by Dean Koontz.

Out of my suggestions I would read the Nora Roberts first...and if you like her style, she has a ridiculous number of books in print. including some futuristic murder mysteries under JD Robb

The trilogoy goes Daring to Dream, Keeping the Dream, and Holdign the Dream.

The oscar wilde...read when you're in the mood for humor (the importance of being earnest) and afterwards, rent the recent movie...very well done and hysterically funny

I know why the caged bird sings...when you're in the mood for a good cry. Maya angelou did NOT have an easy childhood, and presents it unflinchingly

I would second a prayer for owen meany, and also by Irving, "the world according to garp" Irving excels at engrossing, and thought provactive prose.

Stanger in a strange land by Robert Heinlein
because it's a strange book with worthy sentence about life, women men. great plot and writing

any book of Isabel Allende
South american stories full of tradition, magic and extreme caracters, great writing too

The stranger by Camus
Hate or love it but try it
