On "Write only what you know"

Sound thinking. Think I'll write Hitler's Diary.

Funny that you mentioned that.

Somebody actually forged Hitler's diaries and ended up fooling a lot of "experts" and creating a bidding war in the media. The whole fascinating story is in Robert Harris's book Selling Hitler.

It's a great read.

Didn't read the book but I did follow the hoax. Hence my psuedo-edit joke. Rupert Murdoch was the tool that perpetrated/validated the hoax. I think it was published and retracted in some of his other papers in other countries. Been a while so don't use me as your only source (see what I did there?). But he's well known in the States as the media strangler and owner of newscorp/fox news.

The forger (Konrad Kujau) at first fooled Hugh Trevor-Riper, an accomplished historian. A bit awkward, but he did change his mind as it all unravelled, but a testament to the forger's detail.

Has anyone bothered doing Mussolini's Diary, or Mao's Diary, or Stalin's Diary? Or even Nixon's Diary? Don't attempt the current illiterate -- like Dubya's Diary, it's mostly cartoons.
