***3 years earlier***
Nicole was dreading tonight.

It was the night her former squadron got together for a couple of beers and talked about old times. The squad made it a point to meet every couple of years...although they had only met last year, this year was special because one of their own was killed overseas earlier that month and they wanted to have a drink in his honor.

The only reason she was regretting it was because of Jackson--he'd be there too...

It was a good thing she wasn't showing at 8 weeks pregnant, but still, she wore a black leather jacket over her black t-shirt. She had just left work, so she still had her service pistol and badge on her belt as she walked into the bar. Immediately she saw some of the guys there gathered around a few tables that were placed together. A few hugs were exchanged and some handshakes. It must have seemed weird to see all these guys with Nicole because she seemed to get a few dirty looks from the waitresses that were serving them.

"We ordered you a beer!" One of them exclaimed and pushed a beer toward Nicole.

"Damn, I wish I could fellas, but I'm still on the clock..." she lied. Hopefully they bought it? She hadn't told anyone she was pregnant and so far, no one noticed in the dimly lit, smoky air of the bar.

"Come on Mason, one won't kill ya!"

Nicole laughed and shook her head, "Yeah, but someone has to stay sober to drive all your drunk asses home, right?" They laughed and suddenly, there were talking about old times...Nicole seemed to relax a little and started to enjoy herself...she hadn't thought about Jackson, even though he was supposed to show but so far, he hadn't... And if he showed, great...and if didn't, then he didn't, then she’d deal with it.

***Present day***
She hated being on the run.

Right now, Nicole found herself in Dallas, Texas...running for her life.

It wasn't like it was something new... she always seemed to be in trouble.

But this time, she found herself from the Russian Mob. Long story short? She had been working a case and well, the Russians were involved and she thought she could bring them down but yeah...that didn't quite work out as she had planned it.

At least...at least Ryan was safe...that was all she needed to know...

Two months prior, she had gotten a message out to Jackson about the mess she was in. It was a message he would need to work at figuring out but she knew he would have done so by now. And if he did, she was on her own.

Her message was simple. Get Ryan to safety and erase his past...not that a two year old would have much of one, but she couldn't take any changes. Hide Ryan and then forget about her. There was no way to get out of the mess he had dug herself in to. Right now, she would just continue to run for as long as she could.

They couldn't get the information she had about them and that's what they wanted the most... and they would kill anyone who would get in their way to silence her.

Jackson Slater made it very difficult for anyone to find him. His business required it. He had spent 7 years in the military; the last 4 in Special Forces working with a team that performed missions that others shied away from. He left the service after one secret mission that went wrong. It was a mission that was performed without his team... well, without most of the team.

Slater and Cooper had been drawn back in, for one mission. Jackson didn't want to do it, but Cooper was hell-bent on performing the mission. Jackson finally agreed to do it because Cooper said he was going to do it with or without him. Jackson couldn't let him go in without having a familiar face as a partner.

That mission had been a total failure. The intel they had been given was bad. The target they were supposed to extract was not where she was supposed to be. The mission was a total cluster-fuck. There was one other problem with the mission..... they had no support. It was a black-ops mission. They had nobody to help them. All there was going to be was an extraction team at the pick-up point at a certain time. If they weren't there... too bad.

They did not make it to the extraction point. Cooper was killed in the ambush. Jackson was lucky to make it out with only a graze wound. He spent the next 3 weeks making his way home. He had arrived back in the states just in time for the reunion. By now, everyone was aware of Cooper's death. Nobody knew where Jackson was. He couldn't face his old team.

After that, Jackson had gone off the reservation. He was unhappy with his commanders who he felt had betrayed him and Cooper. He decided that he was going to fight for himself and nobody else. He became a mercenary. He fought for himself and for money.... and he was good at it. He was very much in demand, and could name his price. He was picky about the jobs that he took.

When he got the message, he dropped everything. He found Ryan. He made sure Ryan was okay, and then he went looking for Nicole. He knew she didn't want that, but it was what he was going to do. Once Jackson was sure that Ryan was well hidden and in good hands, he went after Nicole. He knew where to start, but would she really stay in New Mexico?

2 weeks later—New Orleans—Mardi Gras

Stupid…stupid… Nicole thought as she hurried from the club… it was loud and she probably smelled of smoke and whatever it was…she knew some of it could probably be some sort of alcoholic drink…margarita perhaps? Who knew, but as she was rushing through the crowd, she managed to bump into someone and they ended up spilling their drink on her.

Small price to pay for adding on 5 minutes to her life…because she knew that once they found her, they would kill her.

Stepping out on to the crowded street, she quickly looked around. She had been pursued before, but that was in the jungles when she was in the military and she had a team with her as they watched each other six…

She had no one right now and she didn’t want to be too conspicuous.. She wanted to blend in with the crowd and she was sure she was able to. She didn’t have her fiery red hair anymore. Hell, once she was able to, she had dyed it jet black…as for her tattoos, those were easy to cover up with her beat-up leather jacket…which hid her back up piece beautifully. Also on her person was her Mark II. Sure, it wasn’t much but right now, it was all she had.

God, they stuck out like a sore thumb… damn Russians…

Suddenly, someone grabbed her and Nicole was instantly on the defensive and was ready to knock their ass to the ground when she realized it was just a drunk college kid... whom she easily pushed away but that little scene caught their attention and she could see that they were closing in on her.

Instantly, she fell to the ground and looked around. She had to keep herself upright so that she wouldn’t be trampled but the ever growing crowd. Pushing her way through, she stayed low and headed into another side bar, this one was just as crowded as the outside... Finally able to stand to her full height, she pushed her way to the back of the bar. As much as the crowd protected her, it also posed a danger to those around her… It wouldn’t be long before they realized she had slipped out back so she had to get away fast. This was a hell of place to be stuck in during one of their busiest times of the year… damn coincidence, really…

Heading down the dark alley, she stayed close to the side of the buildings as she walked... A loud bang caught her attention but she didn’t look back… why should she when she knew exactly who it was?!

Jackson knew all of her old haunts. He knew Nicole better than anyone else. There were some people that actually thought Jackson knew Nicole better than she knew herself. In this case, though, there was no sign of her. He couldn't even get an indication that she had been anywhere close in some time.

Using some of his vast network of connections (you don't get to be as good as Jackson is without having connections ... and very good ones at that) he put out feelers to see if he could identify a woman in trouble that sounded like it could be Nicole.

At the same time, Jackson started to look into the work she had been doing on the force before she left. She was good at what she did, and he was pretty certain that she pissed some people off ... both on and off the force. Hell, he knew first hand just how bad she could piss people off.

When the news came back that she had been involved in a case with the Russian Mob and that they were not real happy with her. This was one organization that Jackson did not have great contacts with, although, he did have a couple people on the inside. They were lower level, but they could provide him with some intel.

The intel he got was basic, but it gave Jackson something to go on. A high priority hit team had been sent to Dallas, TX to take out a target. Jackson knew, as soon as he heard it that it was Nicole they were sent after. His next destination was known.

He set out immediately and arrived in Dallas in the middle of the night. He spent the entire next day trying to track down Nicole, or the hit team... or both. He figured that Nicole would stay in areas where there were a lot of people... the more eyes around, the harder it is to carry out a mission. He was right. Finally, he had eyes on her.

Things had happened so fast that Nicole could honestly not recall what day today was…nor the date. But here she sat…in the busy downtown business district of Dallas, TX. It was a busy Monday morning and people in business suits strutted around toward their jobs. The place she was in right now had a few breakfast carts, most serving gourmet coffee and some other breakfast goodies…

Speaking of food, when was the last time she ate? She wasn’t sure…it had to be about two days ago. She didn’t have much money anymore—she had gotten rid of her credit cards and carried cash but it was running extremely low. Not that she was needing it… this morning she had enough for a cup of coffee… which she sipped on as she kept her eyes on a building across the street… well, the courthouse to be exact.

Her investigation had led her here. She had followed the path of Senator Robert “Smith”… today his wife had a court appearance because of some issues regarding a minor traffic stop. The Senator was very familiar with the higher ups in the courts and law enforcement and had planned to have his wife’s case overlooked but for some unknown reason, it reached the papers and well, the appearance had to be made…

All Nicole wanted to do was to let the Senator know she was still alive…so far. The men he had sent after her hadn’t gotten to her. Hopefully that would be enough to get his attention that she wasn’t going to go away any time soon. Sure, his contacts reached incredibly high but there were still a few good guys out there that didn’t have their hands in the pot. And with the information Nicole had on him, she knew the Senator was going to extremely surprised when he saw that she was still alive…

Perhaps it was because she was tired or she was too focused on the Senator as she walked toward the courthouse but she never saw the two men heading toward her…they were also making sure to try to blend in as they wore business suits…

Jackson was running on no sleep, however, that was not uncommon for him when he was working. Although he was not being paid, this was work. He was on a mission, and he was hyper-focused on completing this mission. It was different than any other mission he had been on. This one was personal.

He got a lead on Nicole's whereabouts, and set about trying to locate her. He knew it was just a matter of time, and within two days he had her in his sights. Jackson kept his distance. He wanted to get the lay of the land and try to figure out what Nicole was up to. If she was hiding, why was she out during the day?

He also wanted to see if there was anyone else watching Nicole. When he saw her start to move across the street, he also saw the two guys in suits begin to move. Fortunately, he had the advantage. He was closer to her, and was able to get to her and take her by the arm.

"Raven, just come with me." He used her call name to get her attention and let her know it was a friend before she reacted to a threat. He guided her down the street and into an alley. From where they were, they would have the advantage if the two guys followed them.

Raven.

She hadn’t heard that call sign in a long time… Inwardly, she cursed and let him lead her away from her target. As much as she wanted to yank her arm away, she didn’t want to cause a scene, especially not with the heavy presence of security around. In the background, she heard the shouts and knew that the senator had just left the courthouse…

Once they were in the alley, Nicole yanked her arm away and turned to face Jackson. She wanted to hate him so much right now for everything… leaving her and never contacting her again… but then, she also wanted to throw her arms around him and hold onto to him… she was thankful to see him but she had told him in her message to not come looking for her.

Instead of being brave, she did let her guard down for a moment and wrapped her arms around him… “I told you not to come back for me...” she said in a small whisper before pulling away. “I almost want to know how you found me but I know you, you have your ways.” They were out of sight and well hidden in the alley so she took that time to lean against the wall and let out a deep breath. “Ryan’s safe?”

He put his finger to his lips, and nodded. Then with two fingers, he pointed to his eyes and then down the alley to where they had entered. Two guys in suits walked around the corner and stopped. Since Jackson and Nicole were out of sight, the suits did not venture any further into the alley.

When they had gone, Jackson turned to Nicole. "Ryan is safer than anyone else on the planet. The people protecting him are the best in the world and they will take very good care of him. Trust me."

He looked up and down the alley and then led her out into the alley, in the rear door of a business and out onto a street on the opposite side of the alley from the courthouse. There was some shock from the store owners, but Jackson didn't care.

He led her down the street and to an SUV with tinted windows that he had rented in one of the many names that he used and had credit cards in. Once inside, he looked at Nicole. "Okay Nicole, what is going on. Spill it."

She knew there was no playing Jackson... he was too smart for that and he knew all of Nicole’s tricks so what use was there in trying to deceive him? He’d find out anyway…if he didn’t already know, that is. He probably just wanted to get her side of it…

Hell, she didn’t know anymore.

Nicole was quiet for a few minutes before taking a deep breath and telling him everything. The Senator’s involvement with the Russians…how corrupt the system was and how they broke into her own home and threatened her and her child. Which was why she had to get him into hiding and she knew the only person that could make that happen…and the only person she could trust was Jackson.

“Once they found out what I knew, they put out a hit on me and anyone close to me… I knew I couldn’t trust anyone anymore, so I ran. And not just ran away but ran to get as much evidence as I could… and I think I struck a nerve after shutting down a couple of them and their businesses down along the way.”

“The Senator is involved, and I wanted to make him aware that I wasn’t going any where soon.” There. That was all of it. There were no other words, “I told you to not to come after me, Cowboy…” she said quietly, wondering if she could make a run for it but wasn’t sure she had the strength to run from both him and the mob…

He sat there silently for a couple of minutes looking at her. Some things never changed. Nicole was always stubborn. He knew that would never change. What he also knew was that he was even more stubborn than she was, which was no small feat.

"I know what you told me. You know that there was no way I was going to leave you out here alone. You know me much better than that. You knew the risk you were taking by sending Ryan to me. Once I knew you were in trouble, I was coming for you. The only thing that slowed me down was making sure your son was safe."

Jackson started the SUV and put it in gear. Pulling away from the curb, he headed out of town. He found a hotel for them to stay in. "We will get your message to the senator. Trust me, if he is as dirty as you say, the message will be loud and clear."

After getting her settled in the room, he told her to take a shower. "I will go get us some food. You look like you need it. I will give you some privacy while you shower. I will see you in about 30 minutes. Oh, and don't try going anywhere... I will find you."

"I will find you."

It wasn't a threat. It was a promise and Nicole, knowing exactly what this man was capable of, didn't dare give him a snarky remark or let the thought of running even cross her mind. She just nodded and turned to clean up.

God, the shower felt so good. She spent a long time in there and when she was done, she wrapped herself up in a robe and walked out to the bedroom where she expected to find Jackson but he wasn't in there. He did, however, provide her some clothes, which were laying on the bed. Quickly, she changed into a pair of pajama pants and a t-shirt...although it was clearly only noon, she knew she wouldn't be going anywhere soon... she knew he wanted more answers to his ever questioning demeanor.

There was one she knew hung in the air and that was about Ryan. How would Jackson take it that Ryan was his?

Maybe he already knew?

Taking a deep breath, Nicole walked into the main living area of the suite that Jackson had gotten for them. Once she entered, she could smell the food... mexican food at that...her favorite.

"Smells good.." she said as she took a seat opposite of him at the small table provided....

He was certain that she would not attempt to escape him. She knew better. In fact, nobody knew Jackson better than Nicole did. They were perfect together. When they worked together, nothing could overcome them, because they knew what each other was doing, even before that person knew what they were doing.

Jackson knew what Nicole’s favorite food was. He went and purchased large quantities. It was obvious that she had not been eating well. She looked skinny. Not that it was a bad look on her. In Jackson’s mind, there was no bad look on Nicole.

Watching her come into the room in pajama pants and a t- shirt, Jackson took all of her in. He never felt about another woman the way he felt about Nicole. His only regret was that they did not have the opportunity to see where things would go between them. Nicole had moved on from him and then he went on his mercenary missions.

“Well, I got all of your favorite foods, and I got you comfortable clothes. I am not going to press the issue, but you are going to fill me in, because I know you want to see your son again...... soon.”

Nicole flinched when he mentioned their son. It was now or never because well, she could tell he probably thought that she had met someone else and well… yeah… that didn’t happen.

With a deep breath, she didn’t reach for the food right away, even though she was hungry, she couldn’t eat. Instead, she nodded before speaking, her voice timid, which was something rare for her, “Our son, Jackson.” She clasped her hands and dared not look at him, “Ryan’s your son.”

“That’s why I called you. I knew you would keep his safe… I didn’t tell you about him because you never got back to me that night we were all supposed to get together. I had heard rumors about what had happened with you on your last mission and—” and what? There was no real rhyme or reason about not telling him… “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

He sat there in shock. He could not believe what he just heard from Nicole. He had a son and he wasn’t aware of it.... until now. It wasn’t like she had hidden it from him. He hadn’t been around much lately. In fact, he hadn’t been around Nicole in a long while, especially not for Nicole.

They had become very close. They were partners in the ultimate sense. They knew one another better than they knew themselves. He had gone away after things had become very personal with them. It wasn’t like he didn’t want more from Nicole. He wanted all he could have with her. He just wasn’t convinced she felt the same about him.

“Ryan is OUR son? You sent our son to me and expected me to just let you go
? You expected our son to grow up without a mother? That is not going to happen. He will grow up without a father before he grows up without a mother. “

"I expect him to grow up safely!" She shot back, not one to back down. "Yes, I sent him to you because I knew you would take care of him. I sent him to you because it was too dangerous for him to be with me as long as these fuck heads were after me! They will not leave me alone because of what I know and I didn't want our son in danger!"

Her temper could match his when needed and right now, it seemed like two pit bulls facing each other and not intimidated by the other.

She lowered her voice and sighed, "I asked you to hide him because of the danger I'm in. I can only trust you, Jackson, you know that. I got myself into this mess and although I asked you for your help, I can get myself out of it!" She said before turning around and disappearing into the bedroom and slamming the door. Her hunger, again, was gone. Not because of what happened but because of just how deep she was in with all this.

Jackson sat there after she went into the bedroom. He did not follow her. It wasn't worth it. He knew that she needed time to settle down. If he pushed the issue now, it would only make her more upset, and that would be counter-productive.

He took a burner phone out of his backpack. He turned it on and dialed a number. "was the package delivered safely?" He paused and waited for the answer. "Good. Make sure that it is not damaged. I will be in touch to let you know when I will retrieve it."

After putting the phone away, he picked at some of the food.... food that was going to go to waste, because Nicole would never eat when she was upset. Jackson wanted to get a shower, but he was not going to go into the bedroom until Nicole had settled down. He turned on the television for some noise and got comfortable. He put his feet up on the table, and faced the door... his Sig resting in his lap in case someone dared to come through the door.

She had fallen asleep and her stomach was rumbling. Nicole opened her eyes and realized it was late evening. She was a lot more tired than she had thought. Staying in bed, she looked up at the ceiling and recalled the 'talk' she and Jackson had had earlier.

If she was honest with herself, he really was a good man. He had hidden their child without knowing, nor questioning anything. Whether he would ever admit it or not, he was a softy.

A softy who would have no qualms about killing the bad guy, but a softy no less.

Getting up out of bed, she headed out of the bedroom and over to the table where the food had gotten cold. She warmed up some in the small microwave and then sat down to eat it.

He heard the door to the bedroom open. Turning his head, Jackson watched Nicole come out of the room. She remained silent. This was an indication that she was not yet ready to talk. He could read her very well.

He slid the Sig into his waistband and watched as she heated some food and sat down to eat. He wasn't sure if she had seen it, but with Nicole it really didn't matter. She was a weapons expert, and she had to know he was packing.

As they sat there silently, he thought about the fact that he was a father. It was unexpected. Honestly, he had figured that would never happen, because of the line of work he had chosen after leaving the service.

Of course, there had been that time with Nicole. He never thought of getting her pregnant. Neither of them did. They got caught up in feelings that had been there for some time... for him they were still there, but he didn't believe that they were reciprocated.

"I'm sorry I didn't make more of an effort to tell you that you were going to be a father." She said, after her second plate. She didn't look at him. The only thing that broke the complete silence between them was that of the TV in the background.

"I should have let you know but then, things happened... the cases, being assigned to desk duty gives you a lot of time to review reports, that's for sure..." it was then she told him how she had found descripencies in reports and had brought it to her captain's attention and he seemed concerned... Probably a little too concerned because within a week, after he brought it to his superiors, he ended up dead.

It was by then she gave birth to Ryan and took time off. But, in between staying home and raising him, she kept digging. When she had gone back to work, she kept persuing the issue. So much so that it prompted a warning from the Russian mob. Particually from one guy, Sasha, who held a gun to Nicole's head that one night they had broken in and which was the turning point of doing what she had to do. No, she didn't kill him, although she would have loved to.

"I got so caught up in all this that all I knew was I needed to get Ryan to safety before I was going to bring these guys down." She said, finishing up. All the while, she kept her cool during all this. "I pushed in finding you and when I finally did, it was too late...all I wanted to do was make sure our child was safe."

She finished her bottle of water, "There was going to be a letter to be delivered to you should anything happen to me...explaining all this in case worse came to worse. But listen Jackson, I need you to leave and let me finish this. This isn't your fight...all I want you to do is keep Ryan safe, OK?"

Jackson listened to Nicole tell the story. He did not interrupt her. He did not agree with her. he did not disagree with her. He just watched and listened. The time for disagreement would come soon enough. Better to just let her get it all out first.

When she was finished, he remained quiet. He took it all in. He knew how he was going to respond to Nicole, but he stayed quiet... for now. He watched her finish eating and finish her water. He got up and walked into the bedroom.

After undressing, he stepped into the shower. Letting the water beat down on him allowed him the opportunity to process everything that Nicole had just shared. It also gave him the time to develop a plan. There was no way he was leaving her, but how was he going to tell her that without her flying off the handle.

Nicole didn't move after Jackson got up and disappeared in the bathroom.

She didn't stop him... she didn't call after him. She let him go. Nicole wasn't insensitive to his needs or feelings, which he did have. Despite others thinking he was cold, Nicole knew the man better than that. Some would say better than she knew herself. They made a hell of a team, that was for sure. She had learned a lot from Jackson while in the military with him. Perhaps that was another reason they had clicked outside of the ranks.

It was all unplanned really. Both didn't have any immediate family so they went on a few R&Rs together. Mostly talking and what-not... a few drinks together.. then one night, it just happened. The sex was amazing. It was hot and rough and hard..just everything under the sun. After Nicole left the service, with Jackson staying in, they still got together for drinks and sex...

As she sat there, she thought about running again, but his promise from earlier still haunted her mind. He would find her. Hell, did already and she didn't think she had left that good of a trail. If she thought about it anymore, she would come to the realization that yes, she did need his help but she didn't want him hurt because of her persistance of this whole ordeal.

She made a decision. Getting up from the table, she walked into the bedroom and to the bathroom. Once in there, she quickly undressed and stepped into the shower with Jackson...

His eyes closed, the water beating down on him, Jackson ran everything through his mind. Things had changed drastically in the last 24 hours. Before this, he was just searching for Nicole to make sure that she was okay. Now, the landscape was much different.

Nicole was now the mother of his child. Ryan wasn't just Nicole's son that Jackson had to make sure was okay. Ryan was HIS son, also. Nicole wanted him to leave her. THAT was not going to happen. He was not going to leave the mother of his son out on her own. They were going to do this together. Whatever it took.

Jackson opened his eyes and was shocked to see Nicole stepping into the shower with him. She looked as good as ever..... maybe better. He looked at her in a different light, now. Looking at her wonderful body standing in front of him aroused him immediately.

Nicole? What are you doing? If this is your way of trying to convince me that I should leave you to handle the situation, it is not going to work. I am staying... no matter what you say or do."

She didn't say anything at first, instead, she reached over and ran her hands up his chest. There were a few new scars showing...ones she'd have to ask about later. It was a full minute before she decided to speak, "I know you're not going any where Cowboy. And no matter how hard I please my case or try to push you away, you're here to stay... just please, promise me one thing. You're not going to have my taken away and hidden so you can finish the job yourself. I know it's something you've probably considered..."

It was then she looked up at him...looked into his eyes and waiting for his response. By then though, her hands had formed a path down his chest and started to go lower.

"Promise me." She said as she finally grabbed his cock with both hands and slowly started to stroke it.

He listened to Nicole as she talked to him. Her hands on his chest heightened his arousal. His eyes moved over her incredible body as she asked him not to go rogue on her mission and move her out of the way. He had considered that, but he knew that she would never forgive him if he did that, so, Jackson had eliminated that possibility.

Her hands on his cock were magic. He stepped to her, wrapped one hand around her throat and pinned her to the wall. Looking down, deep into her eyes... staring at her.. not saying a word for a moment... gripping her throat tighter.

"If I was considering that possibility, you stroking my cock would not make me do away with it." He spun her around and pressed her perfect tits to the tile wall. Gripping a handful of her hair, he tilted her head back and kissed her neck as he pressed his body to hers.

Jackson's cock pressed to Nicole's tight ass as he kissed and licked and sucked her neck.... leaving a little mark which her hair would cover. :If you needed to get fucked, why didn't you just say so Nicole. You didn't need to come in here using some ruse to get a grip on my cock. He moved his cock between her legs and slid it slowly along her silky lips.

She could still breath and the only reason her heartbeat sped up was because she missed this with him…Nicole knew Jackson would never hurt her physically. Their lovemaking was always rough. Nothing was ever gentle about it and it seemed, this time would be no different. No, she didn’t come in to change his mind about anything. She needed his help on this, that much she could admit.

Even though the water was warm, the tiles were still cool against Nicole’s skin and her nipples instantly peaked. She gasped out loud when she felt his cock rub against her and she tried to push against him, but he held her in place.

Shaking her head, she closed her eyes and wanted him so bad, she heard herself begging for him, “Please Jackson…fuck me…I need you inside of—” She didn’t even get the chance to finish when she felt him shove his cock into her, making her moan in sheer pleasure...

There had been no one since their last time… over three and a half years ago. Not that there weren’t any guys who tried to come into her life… what she and Jackson had was something special and she had missed it all so much.
