I' thought I'd start one since I haven't looked very hard and not found much on the how to front

You might take a peek at Homburg's rope thread. I think there are discussions of ties, safety, etc in it.

Amazon has quite a few books on rope bondage and shibari.

... and the Two Knotty Boys also have several tutorials on YouTube if you are more of a visual learner.
