on average how many views/votes do you get per story?

Then would that score go up or down? :D

Way down.

I can usually get away with a sexy demoness bringing a character to a pleasurable, if terminal end. But the moment they start playing nasty or if the story gets a little too freaky then the score gets bashed. (I also take far too much perverse pleasure in throwing horror stories into the general competitions just to catch people off guard :D )

If they care that your main character got killed that means they like your writing.

Interesting. I've only posted 6 things. As a writing exercise more than anything I wanted to try to write a rough-ish sex scene, so I did, this was very different from the other chapters. Well. That ticked everyone off! My scores fell on everything. Not that I was winning any points medals anyway.

Readers love drama, but some of them can't separate their feelings from reality. You're writing in Erotic HORROR. Aren't they supposed to die? At least sometimes?

Yeah, but some readers can't figure out that the emotion they're feeling is the very thing they're wanting and by voting down the chapter they are really hurting the writer who created that entertainment for them. Biting the hand that feeds them in a way.

You still have to take it as a backhanded compliment, right?

Horror doesn't really mean horror on Lit any more. It's steadily trending toward becoming the Sexy Vampire category.

Anal category scores many readers and generally high scores.

Anal Sex (Gasp!): A Hands-On Manual

His Toy Story Ch. 2
4.65 258 109159 Anal (English) 09/08/02 approved

I believe that Anal stories tend to score rather low. The highest one right now has a score of 4.8, and the second highest has 4.79. I have written quite a few in the category, and my highest ranked is this one: http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=317934
which has a score of 4.69, which makes it 74th in the category. Generally speaking, anything with a rank that high in a popular category has a score of over 4.85. They do get a lot of views, though. Somc of mine have well over 100,000 views.

They also attract trolls. Some people think anal sex is disgusting.

Ah, I see, I guess. I don't like to be scared, so I avoid the cat. What is the fascination with vampires all of a sudden? I like more of the cozy-homey-lovey-dovey family kind of erotica.

I'm of the same mind. I have a few in Erotic Horror, but only one that really fits the mold. The sex in it was never meant to be titillating, just shocking. When I wrote it, I didn't expect it to score as well as it did. Now, however, it's sitting at 4.49, just below that coveted red 'H.' Ah, well. I know people like it, and I really loved writing it.

My highest rated horror story is more drama or suspense than horror ( Harvest of Blood ) but it does end badly for everyone. The protagonist gets bitter revenge in the end in that one.

The characters in both versions of Home die horribly, and spend as much time running from their own demons as the spooks. The sex was written to have enough heat to make you feel queasy for noticing it. I think they do a much better job of conveying terror, but they're both way lower rated than Harvest.

Then again, Harvest did have the assistance of a detailed impression read from RogueLurker, which may very well account for the difference in scores all by itself.

It's amazing what another pair of eyes can do, right?

I've noticed that, among my offerings through eXcessica, Gingerbread is my most popular title -- and also the lowest rated by readers. Funny that of all the reviews it's been given, it's received a rating equitable to, say, a B+. Not bad, right? So, if the writing isn't atrocious, then readers must be voting it down because of the content. It's a modern version of Hansel & Gretel (on Lit, it's in the Modern Fairy Tales chain), and there are disclaimers on the site that warn of incest and non-consensual sex. Yet still, it's rated low by readers . . . but it's still selling.

I don't understand people sometimes.

This reminds me of Cathy Bates in misery when she flipped out over the author killing off the main character in the books she loved.

Not enough.

In answer to the original question.

I have only submitted in Novels.
Figures tend to be low in this category, but I am quite pleased with what I have.

Some stats on stories in single category

Anybody else have a few stories in a single catogory willing to share some numbers?

Here are some stats from my stories (39) which have all been in the same category (the dreaded incest/taboo).

24 stories in two series with 7 spinoff stories:
Scores: 4.56 to 4.83, avg 4.71
Votes: 79 - 446, avg 352 in 4 story series, 170 in 20 story series, 111 in 7 spinoff stories
Comments: 0 - 17, avg 11 in 4 story series, 8 in 20 story series, 2 in 7 spinoff stories
Reads: 15,000 - 202,000, lots of variation depending on date published but avg reads/day is 320

Comparison for 8 standalone stories:
Scores: 4.66 - 4.79, avg 4.71
Votes: 489 - 1075, avg 652
Reads: 66,000 - 347,000, avg 616 reads/day

It seems that the votes, comments and reads/day are about double on standalone stories compared to series.

Thanks for the numbers, they're pretty good. It's hard to abandon your series to write a stand alone, it's fun to get to the good stuff without building up characters again. I agree with you that they don't do as well, I know personally I sometimes skip the series if I don't have hours of time to read one.

I originally planned the longer series to be a collection of quickie shorts along the same theme that I didn't see as longer stories but found myself writing continuing most story line over mutiple episodes. That led to the spinoffs to make it easier for the readers to read one character's story. It's a little puzzling why I got so far off track because I found it difficult to write multiple story lines across different episodes and got more so as the series went on.

I'm now trying to finish the spinoffs (with extensions to finish the story lines) and then to return the series to the collection of shorts it was originally to be. My writing style is follow where a story leads rather than planning it, so I hope to find the discipline not to keep stories short in the series and only extend them in the series if the readers ask for more.

Anyway, a little off topic. I wanted to provide the numbers because they were all in the same category. It would be interesting to see the numbers in other categories.

The stories I wrote started off as a one time deal but then I wrote another one and found myself wanting to use the same character. When i started posting them I avoided using chapter numbers so readers wouldn't skip over it thinking that they didn't want to read a story that is several chapters in. For the most part they can all stand alone, they are not too deep, but I do find it tricky keeping the storylines straight. I wish I would not have been so excited to get the first one up because it is written poorly and has some dumb mistakes.

You can edit that first story easy enough and repost it with edited in the notes and story title.

Will my comments and views and all that be reset? or does it just stay where they are at?

The normal procedure is to change the text of the story when you submit an edit ( unless you request something else such as title change, description, etc. in the "notes" section ) and leave everything intact. Your votes, comments, views, etc. will remain. Only the text will change to the updated version, and it will not appear in the NEW list a second time.

If you want to reset those numbers, request a delete for the original, and then submit the new version once the old one has been removed. Everything will start from scratch, and it will show up in the NEW list when approved.

It would be best to put an author's note at the beginning of the new version stating that you've revised the story to correct errors if you decide to go full mulligan.

Thanks Darkniciad, you left me with a full understanding of the editing process.

They also attract trolls. Some people think anal sex is disgusting.

This response to your comment comes a little late but I was reading through this thread again and this jumped out at me. It is so annoying those people, I dont go into the incest or mature for example because it doesn't appeal to me. I got two comments that I deleted even though I fealt kinda fascist for doing it. They didn't really talk about the story just the fact that anal was gay and gross. Such a waste of time on their part, it would seem, to go into a catogory they don't like.

I thought this is an interesting comparison.

Door To Door Wouldn't you like to take her survey?

Two stories, posted almost three years ago on almost the same day. Comparable scores, both are about the same length, but there's a huge disparity in votes and reads. I'll never understand why, exactly, Incest/Taboo is the most popular category on Lit. I understand the nature of the attraction in principle, but as far as erotic fiction, it seems strange that it would be the most popular sub-genre.

Anyway, I just thought this an interesting comparison.
