Lot's of threads lately on heavy duty issues and topics, so to lighten things up, here is a different question:

Is mankind doomed?

Does our innate evil and ability to fuck up outweigh our innate goodness and ability to overcome almost any obstacle?

Or will everything work out for the best eventually?

I know, a little too light hearted :D, but things around here have been so tense lately! ;)

every great culture on earth was either concquered or perished due to war or natural disasters.... from the Mayas, to the Inacs, to the Phoenicians, to the Sumerer.

If somebody conquers us, let it please be the Vulcans. I like Spock's and Tuvork's ears. :D

Jesus will return yielding a sword to slay the nonbelievers. It will get messy, but Satan will be defeated.

LOL...... you funny.:D

Who said worrying never does any good?

Everything I worry about never happens..

So there!!!;) :D

Mr Spock has my vote, backed up by Dark Wing Duck and the Partridge Family. They will be saviours of the planet, creating a one world Government led by Jessica Rabbit and her Vice president John Bobbitt. The World Anthem will be "Don't Worry Be Happy" sung by Alvin and the Chipmunks...

God I cant wait... :D :D

Before September 11th, I would have voted "peachy keen," but now I'm not so sure.

less heavy?

In some ways this might be the most serious topic of all!

It makes me very angry when old hick grannies complain about the "state of the world today". It seems like people believe it is an accepted fact that the world is going to hell in a handbasket!
Bollocks!
The world is getting better every day. In the 20th century we went from children working in sweatshops and segregation to child welfare laws and the Civil Rights campaign. Go back farther in history and things are even bleaker for the common man and/or woman.

The only inconsistency it that greater technololgy means greater power means greater potential for destruction. We could potentially destroy ourselves, but, if the current trend continues, we will be just fine.

of course mankind is doomed!

in a few hundred billion years the universe will collapse in upon itself...do you really think we'll survive that? ;)

I did that on purpose to lure people in. Sneaky bastard ain't I? :D

Treat it as serious or as light as you wish. I did intend it to actually be serious, but people are treating it as a joke and that is fine too - as long as they are having fun I am happy.

I agree that we are doing better than we have in the past, anybody who takes an objective look at the past has to agree with that. But in many ways, especially population density and running out of room to grow, we are doing worse. Eventually something is going to have to give. We actually we more polluting in the past on a per capita basis, but overall I think we are edging towards being at our worst yet with regards to pollution.

Sure many things are cleaner than they were when I was young; many rivers that were polluted then are clean now, but accumulatively I think we are building up to really bad problems that we may not be able to solve before they decimate us. Maybe not in my lifetime, maybe not even in my kids lifetime, but probably before the end of this century.

Pollution and population density, especially in third world countries are not getting better, but worse.

green

Never woulda taken STG for green.

Well, I've never been very green (though I vote green!).
I've heard the chicken-little accusations on one end, and the sky is falling on the other.

A key, I think, is the assertion that someone made, and there are many variations on this, that the entire present world population would fit in an area the size of Texas with the population density of Manhatten (which is quite livable wouldn't you agree those that
have been there?).

Two aspects to this: one says hey! So how bad could the environment really be? (I forget exactly why)

The other: to deny that there are enough resources to go around is ludicrous. It's the unfair distribution of those resources that causes starvation, etc.

The ramifications of this assertion, be that it is true, are pretty proufound I think. Do we really have a resources problem? I dunno - the experts seem to be arguing about it. I tried to do the math, but I came up with too many people for too little land, but then I remembered that I didn't take it into the third dimension (à la the real Manhatten).

It's a complex issue.

But, I think people are more moral every day.

A very narrow minded view there. Man is NOT the whole universe and never will be. We're just little microbes on a dust ball in the far corner of a solar system. Nothing more. Look at the night sky and tell me you cant see that. The awesome distances of space boogle the mind. Who says we're alone? Only we say it. Coz we think we're better than everything else. We are perched here so precariously, just last week an earth destroying sized hunk of rock flew close to us, real close (400,000 miles) Sounds a lot to us, but its not in space terms. Look what happened 65,000,000
years ago. A medium sized meteor took out all life as it was then. It changed the physical make-up of the planet and thew the earth slightly off orbit and changed the atmosphere. It could happen again, shit it darn near did. Billiions of years you say....I strongly disagree...more like a couple of thousand if the earth is lucky.

Everything will be well.

We will eventually all get along, there will be no more hunger, and sickness will be no more.

Until the unevitable war between the women and men,as we finally show men that we are better than they are. :D

OMG .... we are all gonna die

(someday)

Till then I think things are pretty good over all. We have our problems, but things seem to balance out. Remember the ozone hole ? I read in the news that Antartica is still getting colder, so that seems ok for now. If we can keep from doing ourselves in, nature will take it's course as usual. Just as it has down thru the ages.

* trots off humming " It's the end of the world as we know it....... and I feel fine. " *

All we be well - trust me, I know;) !

As to the war between men and women - it'll never happen. Men are slowly being phased out with a larger number of women than men being born, women living longer and increasing levels of female hormones in the envitonment.

So, ladies one day you will wake up and there will be no men left - we will have been phased out, surplus to requirements. This will be a bit of a bitch for your sex lives but you will all be happier;)

I don't think it was narrow-minded at all. He was just putting a "no-matter-what-else-may-happen" limit on things. He was starting at the other end of possibility before moving back.

Here's narrow-minded: thinking that, in the perhaps couple thousand years that mankind has left on this planet, he won't be able to emigrate to other ones. Our greatest chance for longest survival is to SPREAD LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Course an asteroid may hit us tomorrow. Wanna lay bets? Of course if you win you win nothing :)

I think that, given we do survive thousands, then millions, then, hey, even billions(!) of years, well, hmmmm, who knows what secrets we'll unlock in that time that might save us from the BIG CRUNCH or the BIG (whatsitcalled) FREEZE (if the universe expands forever)?

I know, it's a fantasy, but that's just how much faith I have in *my* religion - humanism.

So we just go on, doing what we do, having as much fun as possible, hurting as few others as possible. Has anything really changed?

Mankind will survive, just not all of us. I am keeping myself pure so that when the lotery is run for who gets to go restart the dealio in the garden of eden i get to go. This time I think there ought to be at least two couples involved in order to avoid all those incest issues. It would make the whole group sex thing easier too. Maybe this time we won't need the snake.

excuse me, but did you notice the smilie with a little wink? it was a frigging JOKE. sheesh. you may think i'm an empty-headed flake, but don't start a word war with me, okay? you'll quickly learn otherwise

now, please notice THIS emoticon ----> :(

(oh, and Topher...thanks for the defense, but i'm a she :) )

Topher....apologize to Sigh...SHE is ALL WOMAN.

The Human race is not destined to "spread like the plague". We have no right to be out there at all. We dont own it, its not ours to see. If it was meant that way, the "powers that be" would empower us to do it. Look at what man has done to this planet in the last 200 years. We ARE the plague. Wars, famine, population explosion, diesease, terrorism, cloning, genetic engineering etc.
WE are slowly but surely killing the planet. We take its resources, its water , its animals, its birds , its fish etc without one thought of trying to put anything back into it. I used to go by this signature line.
ONCE THE LAST TREE HAS BEEN CUT DOWN,
ONCE THE LAST FISH HAS BEEN CAUGHT,
ONCE THE LAST RIVER HAS BEEN POISONED
ONLY THEN WILL MAN FIND THAT MONEY CANT BE EATEN.

Wake up people, its time to reverse it, before it gets too late.

I have children, I want to leave this place as a legacy to them, not a liability.

Message to SIGH. Nowhere in my thread did I mention the words "empty-headed flake". We have a differing opinion on things - thats all. If anything I said offended you or anyone else please PM me and you will be apologized to.
