Yesterday afternoon, I got a message on my answering machine from the mother of one of my best childhood friends. This was very strange, because I hadn't even spoken to this friend (Amy) in about four years! My first thought was that something bad had happened - she'd had an accident and was dying or dead!

So I anxiously called her back. Turns out Amy's boyfriend was going to surprise her with a marriage proposal at a bar that night, and her mother thought it would be really special if I could be there. I said I'd come, somewhat reluctantly because I was afraid it would be awkward after all this time.

It turned out to be great! I'm so glad I got to be a small part of such a big event in her life. Amy cried when she saw me and gave me a huge hug. Even with all her friends there, she made time to do some catching up with me and promised we'd get together before she went back up north (where she's stationed with the navy).

The proposal: It was karaoke night, and her boyfriend sat Amy in a chair in front of him while he sang "Forever and Ever, Amen" to her. He wasn't doing very well, so she got up and sang with him. At the end, he sat her back down, knelt in front of her and, in front of the whole bar, asked her to marry him. She was laughing and crying and said "You're in so much trouble!" then "Of course I will." and everyone clapped and whistled. I almost cried myself, it was so sweet.

Just wanted to share that. Here's to renewing old friendships. :)

Thank you for the sweet story. Luckily you get the chance to renew your friendship with her. Maybe we should all call an old friend this holiday and just wish them a Happy Holiday. Thak you for the idea.

Doesn't Ann Landers suggest contacting old friends every new year? I do think it's a wonderful idea. There's another friend I've been meaning to call for almost a year. You know, once you've been out of touch for awhile, it gets to the point that you feel you need a reason to call. That's how I feel, anyways. And it's sad, really, the way good friends can drift apart...
