Alrighty here goes. I need some help with my Windows media players performance. I have tried other places and just cant get any help at all. But since this board is populated by so many I thought Id give it a shot.

Ok as you all know. When you go to something that has vids or mp3's or whatever to download and you click the link, either the save as comes up or the media player for whatever your downloading comes up. if its an mpg then the media player comes up. quicktime, then the quicktime player comes up, ect. Well since I updated my Quicktime player to 5 the other day, my windows media player doesnt come up when i want to download something. My quicktime does. even for Mpg's and Mp3's which is the real odd thing. So i went the the options for both players and checked around. changed some things that delt with format types, but still no luck.

I dont get bugged by like anything. but THIS is really griping me. and I would like to know if anyone can help me out. Thanks. :)

Check to see...

If your quick time player has set itself as the default.

This is the most likely reason for this problem.

If you are not able to find the setting, try reinstalling the latest Windows Mediaplayer again that may do the trick.

I agree with Ezzy.
You can either reinstall Mediaplayer
or
you can reinstall Quicktime.
when you reinstall quicktime it should ask you if you want to use quicktime as the default player for your mp3s and stuff. Click no or the equivalent.
good luck

ive tried all of that and i dont know whats up. the odd thing is though is that the quicktime plays mpg's now which shouldnt even be. i guess its cuz its the new 5 version. but ive tried that and its still wierd. ive reinstalled quicktime and it dont help and i dont like media player 7 at all so i keep 6.4 and use that, which isnt around anymore cuz that was the last one before 7, though i have 7 as well. everything was totally fine before i updated the quicktime. i dunno ill check again though. thanks soo much. i really appreciate it. :D

There's an easier way...

Don't you just hate the way programs install themselves and assume that you want "them" to open all your files?

Solution? Go to the file you want, mpeg, jpeg, or whatever, to open with Windows Media. Press shift and right click on the mouse after you have selected the file with a single click (highlighted). You will get a drop down that includes the option "open with". Select this. You will get another window that displays a list of programs to open the file with. Then, notice at the bottom that there is a check box that says "open all files of this type". Check that. If you do this right from that point on the program you selected will be the default program.

Hope that helps. It's a real pain in the butt to clean up after auto install software.

Oh yeah...reinstalling on Windows 98 etc doesn't usually do a thing except replace missing files. You've got to uninstall using control panel and even this doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes you've got to edit the registery (do this at your own risk) and uncheck items in your start up file (msconfig).
