Okay, so here's a question...

So I've been writing this story that's very loosely based off of an old SRP I read on here. The thread died off a long long time ago, and was never finished. Also I've not seen either of the participants in a long time. The story itself is only loosely based on the idea of the thread, but the characters, location, story elements, and all that stuff are all my own.

Should I contact the original authors to see if they'll let me submit it when and if it finally is done, or should I just credit them at the beginning of the piece? Or should I even do that?

The story is actually quite different from what they did in the thread, but it was my inspiration for the story. What do you think?

Well, if it was more of a muse/inspiration thing then I think it would be polite to say somethinbg like "I just want to say thank you to X and X to whom I owe my inspiration for the following story..."

But if it's very very different then you *probably* don;t need to ask permission...

Agree with V.

Give a sentence at the beginning of the story attributing the idea to that long ago SRP. But the story is yours.

For what it's worth to you, I agree with V & Sarahh. When/if you thank your editor (if you use one) add a line that at least acknowledges the other folks &/or their thread. Maybe even specify where their influence ends ...... just a thought.

If this description is accurate, no permission is required and an author's note explicitly crediting the inspiration would simply be self-indulgent (implying, "look how much better I did with the concept than they did.")
