There was a recent poll conducted by a group called Americans for Victory over Terrorism (founded by William Bennett of Empower America). It surveyed approximately 650 American college students about the current situations in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and on Terrorism in general and a possible military scenario.
Here are some particularly sickening (for me, anyhow) highlights.
55 percent of those polled were able to identify Yasser Arafat, though only 49 percent could identify Colin Powell, the Secretary of State. It only went down from there.
What caught me was this: If a draft was necessary for military actions against terrorist countries such as Iraq (which 66 percent agreed should be invaded if he was still attempting to produce weapons of mass destruction) a full 37 percent would attempt to evade the draft and 21 percent would serve only if they could do so in the US. Compare this with the 66 percent poll number. Apparently, the US college student is a bit confused. But maybe not.
Now, when asked what the best means would be to combat terrorism, 60 percent chose "developing a better understanding of the values and history of other cultures and nations that dislike us". I, personally, am not sure how, exactly, that makes terrorism go away, but that's what they believe.
Now I get to the part which truly makes me angry. The question was asked if the polled believed that the values of the United States were superior to the values of other nations. 71 percent disagreed (with 34 percent strongly disagreeing). Only 5 percent strongly agreed.
That last one baffles me. I'm not sure where these student beleive they live, or if they even know what kind of values our country has. I prefer to believe that they're just vastly undereducated as to the nearly unrestricted liberties they have in this country. I'm not sure they've ever been told straight out that there are things they routinely do here that they would be killed for in other places, or jailed, or merely threatened and beaten. They didn't see the college students in China massacred to get only a small portion of the freedom those int he poll have.
Or perhaps it is as the conservatives have been saying all along: the schooling inundates the students with messages that say that their countries values aren't as valuable and everyone's equal (including the mudering bastards next door).
Either way, this poll was one hell of an eye-opener.
