ok, how do you decompress compressed .avi files? Windows Media Player tries to DL codec decompressors but they never, ever work. not totally, at least. if they don't fail totally, they only get the sound but never the picture done.

is there a handy-dandy program out there that will decompress them for me, or is there a better media player out there that will work better? (a non-Microshaft one) am running Win98.

Have a look on your search engine for "DIV X codecs". Lots of sites have them, and with the latest ones, I have never found anything they would not play.

i got to 96% downloaded of the basic bundle... AND THEN MY FUCKING HARD DRIVE DECIDES TO GO INTO SLEEP MODE!!! lost the whole damn thing!!!



(oh, and i don't care if it has more options, i ain't using adware. so i went with the bundle sans go-faster stripes)

scylis, open your Windows Media Player, and click Tools, then Options. There are several tabs on the top of that page, click the formats tab.

Scroll down to Video file and make sure that box is checked. That is for the .avi extensions. You can also make sure the Movie File box is checked, that would be for all other extensions such as mpg and mpeg.

There is also a box called Description underneath all that, and it tells you what extensions each box represents.

When you click on your avi file, Windows Media Player should automatically open and play your file.

Also, check what version you are using, I'm using 7.01 although there might be a newer version.
