I just watched Cloverfield.

Interesting. Unsettling. Scary. And sad.

First DVD I've watched all the way through in months. I liked it.

I haven't seen it.

I haven't watched a DVD all the way through in months.

*sigh*

Soon, perhaps.

Glad you liked it!

:)

Haven't seen it. Don't want to see it. Scared enough of the dark as it is.

I like monster movies. I haven't watched anything in ages though. I might try and get this one out as the premise sounded interesting.

How annoying is the shaky hand-cam?

A young woman who worked at the restauirant here is the niece of the producer. She had been talking about this movie for months before it came out. When I first saw the previews, I remember seeing the film listed as being called 'Bad Robot.' But Lexie kept insisting it was entitled "Cloverfield."

I still haven't seen it. There was a limited run here before it got swallowed up and spat out by the blockbusters.

Might want to check it out, now . . . .

What was scary was that I paid $6.50 to go see it in the theater. Worst movie I've seen in years.

Never heard of it. Anyone prepared to give a synopsis? Sounds intriguing.

It's just a big fucking lizard isn't it?

It was hyped as being something really freaky and never before seen, but it's just a big fucking lizard.

Great movie (saw it twice in the theater and bought the DVD)! There is no premise, no explanations, no resolution. It is a group of yuppies giving their buddy a going away party in NY when there's an enormous explosion. They run outside, and right into the middle of what it might be like if the most implausible thing in history actually happened. You don't know what is going on because you're watching this video that they filmed (and was later found by the government in, "What was formerly known as Central Park"). What I liked about it was that it made the experience far more intense and believable than any monster movie I'd ever seen (except maybe Alien & Aliens). What I didn't like was some of the choices the characters made (kind of a stretch). The shaky cam was a non-issue for me, although there were lots of stories about people supposedly getting sick in the theaters.

The interesting thing was all the viral marketing on the net (there were several web sites devoted to giving out clues that were virtually impossible to find). On the down side, because of the premise, you don't get any answers about what it is, how it got here, or what happens after the camera is "lost" (because you're just watching the film in the government's research vaults). This annoyed some people and intrigued others. It is the largest January release ever, so it was a pretty big deal (especially for this genre), but didn't inspire a lot of repeat business, so was out of the theaters pretty fast.

If you want to see some of the back story that you won't find anywhere, go to www.Cloverfieldclues.com (an independent site that compiled information). There are several sites to "find" information out about the movie, but none of those questions are answered during this film, so it's only if you like trying to piece together mysteries. JJ Abrams did say in an interview that the creature was from the bottom of the ocean and had been down there a long time (although whether in his huge form, or if he was genetically altered we don't know). It was around 300' tall, so there were some pretty amazing scenes of him rearranging NY's property values. :D

You forgot about the spider thingies that came off the big monster and caused people to blow up... It was a bit too much of a stretch and I hate movies that don't have endings. I haven't talked to too many people who actually liked the flick and when I first saw the previews, I was excited to go see it. I'd rather have seen the movie from a narrator's point of view instead of from the shaky camera view. I mean, even I am Legend was a better story.

I didn't forget them, since a bunch of people haven't seen the movie yet I didn't want to give too much away (since the element of surprise is a lot of it's appeal). This did seem to be one of those movies that divided people along "I loved it" or "I hated it" without much in between. Then again, all there is to compare it to is Godzilla or Gamera movies, so it's an enormous step up in quality for fans of the, "Giant monster stomps buildings!" genre. The critics liked it for the exact same reason you (and most people) didn't. It was an ambitious way to approach the movie, without the "God" perspective or the incredibly knowledgeable scientist who helpfully explains everything so the audience doesn't have to fill in the blanks. This was a bit more like The Mist, where it just is what it is. No explanations offered. I really dug it.

I wonder if it is anything like the korean horror movie, "The Host"? That was a pretty decent movie and this past year most US "originals" are ripoffs of foreign films.

I need to rent it this weekend before I can read this topic. This is the one movie besides No Country for Old Men (which I already saw) that came out recently that I don't want spoiled at all, which is becoming very difficult to do...

I loved The Mist. The ending, while grusome is what made that movie one of the best. I am a fan of the old Godzilla movies too, I think they're classics. But for some reason, I flashed back to the Blair Witch Project the instant I saw how the movie was going to go. After that, I had to fight to keep my sister in the theater because I wanted to see the entire movie before I decided how I felt. I won't be buying it, or watching it again unless it comes out on one of the movie channels that I have.

I would recommend going to see 88 minutes. It was one of the best thrillers I've seen this year and I'm not that big a fan of Al Pacino, but he was fantastic in that movie. I have to change that, it was one of the best movies I've seen this year.

I'll probably rent it this weekend. From the comments I can imagine the pitch: It's Blair Witch meets Godzilla, dude.

Ack. I hadn't seen DK's post just before mine when I wrote this.

Okay I'm outta this thread. Someone said "spider thingies," and that's my cue to go. [rolleyes]

There were comparisons, but from what I've heard, The Host was more of a mystery, monster movie. This one doesn't tell you much, but from the moment they walk out on the street, there's no mystery about what's happening. There isn't much in the way of character development. It's only plot is that the main character had an argument with the girl he's loved his whole life, and she's injured in the middle of what's going down. He has to go try to save her (without getting stepped on or eaten). Instead of a plot, they went for ultimate confusion and realism (although some would argue it wasn't so realistic ;) ).

That's another part I had problems with. The girl was laying on the floor of her apartment with a rebar through her. How many women do you know that's going to be up to doing what she did after they pulled her off the rebar? That was a bit too much suspension of disbelief for me.

hehe....Remind me to never go to a movie with you (at least one you've already seen before). Did you miss the part where several people said they still want to see this for the first time? :)

You're right, there were several things that were pretty much impossible (which for a "realistic" movie does some significant damage).

To me the only really bad part of the movie was you see the creature. I mean it's this weird thing, then you see the face and it's like well damn just ruin the whole thing.

For those of you who have seen the movie, think Enemy Mine, old movie yes but more or less same look. If you haven't seen it, do find a copy, it's a really good movie.

Now as for The Host, it's not the same in any way. The Host was very interesting and well done, but totally different story and set up. About only difference is both had a shaky camera. That said though, get ahold of the movie it is very well done and interesting.
