The Brits are coming...
There's a special news programme on TV as I type giving details of troop deployment into Afghanistan.
After six weeks of war games with the Omanis in the Gulf, combat troops are being sent into Afghanistan to a) go in to set up the infrastructure for a more substantial force later on and b) support the members of SAS who are already on the ground in Afghanistan carrying out their own missions.
A substantial part of the British Fleet is staying in the area and are at the moment replacing the planes on the aircraft carriers with helicopters to carry out troop movements.
Just 200 marines are in the first group but many more combatants are being held in readiness to return at a moments notice.
The news is coming in all the time at the moment but that's about the gist of it.
It's the start of the next phase.
At least the SAS and the Special Forces already 'on the ground' will be getting a more visible support from the Brits.
HMS Illustrious will be leading a flotilla including the destroyer HMS Southampton. The 16th Airborne Brigade are also involved. The Marine Commandos train each year in Norway in sub-zero temperatures so with the Afghanistan winter almost upon us they will play a central role.
4,000 more troops will follow shortly.
As one reporter has just said "At least it raplaces the rhetoric with much needed action".
So far the Brits have just been playing a supporting role for the US but now you're getting our muscle as well!
Personally I don't know which direction this whole "War Against Terrorism" and the "Hunt For bin Laden" will take, or whether it will even succeed.
But finally America you've got us whether you like it or not!
I can feel centuries of warrior blood surging through my veins...
As Churchill once said about another war and and another place: "I don't know whether I would be such a bloody fool to start it in the first place but once started I would not be even a bigger bloody fool to stop it half way through"
