Oh, that's just... sad, but also pretty unsurprising.
I was in France over Christmas and it was being very well promoted. I made the fella read a page when we saw it in the bookstore, wanting to know if it read as juvenile in French as it does in English. His response? "Oh, this is terrible. How can women read this?"
I just laughed.
However, I did tell all our friends that while I find it very poorly written, I wouldn't think badly of them if any of them wanted to read it.
Anyway, the article brought up a good point about the lighter tone of these books being a departure from most of French literature. Just for that, yeah, I see a lot of French women reading it.

I can't read French. So for me an edition of Fifty Shades written entirely in French would actually be a vast improvement over the original...
