In the news: boy complains of itching inside his ear. Doctor discovers spiders (2) "nesting" in there. Flushes them out with water. One spider drowns during the process; one comes out swimmin'.

I foresee a new fashion accessory- Bright-colored net ear covers, kind of like shower caps...
Someone needs to get on that, right away, eh?

Do they have spiders here in Ontario?

Lots.

I like the little black and white wolf spiders. Interesting to watch.

You have to keep an eye out for the Golden Orb Weavers at the end of the summer. They're about 5 cm (2 inches) long then, 10 cm (4 inches) with their legs. They like to build webs in inconvenient places like in your back door.

They're very pretty though.

You think that's bad, try getting a tick in your ear sometime.

Not only does the critter swell up, but the bite itches. :(

I've never seen one that big.

Pretty? Are they poisonous?

Can they kill birds?

They can get to a pretty good size (they keep building big webs between our clothes line, bushes and garage door every year)

Yes, they are kind of pretty, not poisonous to you (unless you're allergic)

And I'm guessing you're still having pigeon problems? ;)

When we ride in the spring/summer, whoever is in front on the trail has to carry a stick and wave it around in front of them, or they get a face full of web. We got 'em here, too.

Oh.

Oh good.

They're actually getting nicer to me, don't wake me up too early in the morning anymore. But they still get my room invaded too much, and also steal my roomies' attention.

A face full of web? :D

That's just too funny to picture.

They build BIG webs.

"The Golden Orb Weavers build large, semi-permanent orb webs. The strong silk has a golden sheen. These spiders remain in their webs day and night and gain some protection from bird attack by the presence of a 'barrier network' of threads on one or both sides of the orb web. Sometimes their strong webs manage to trap small birds or bats, and the spider will wrap them and feed upon them. Commoner prey items include flies, beetles, locusts, wood moths and cicadas."

Down here there is an absolutely beautiful Spider about the size of your palm. It's Neon Green and black. It usually builds it's webs high in the trees but if you watch for them you can find them.

We also have one down here that is Gray with white stripes. About the size of a dime. It's agressive and fast and it bites hard. It is kind of neat to watch though. (I have yet to see one in a web so it must be a stalker.)

*yawn*

What's the problem... it's not like it was up his nose.

“ . . . spiders are ruthless storm troops in the matriarchal anarchy that is the arthropod world: theirs is the most diverse, female-dominated, entirely predatory order on the face of the earth. As such, spiders are key components of all ecosystems in which they live.”

Once we do ourselves in these wicked widows will inherit the earth.
