I am watching "Survivorman" right now and chuckling to myself.

Oh the drama, the suffering and the B.S.

The main character is set down on top of a mountain in the Rockies for a week. It took him three days to get down into a valley and set up a shelter. Obviously he is not well versed on working in the mountains.

He built a shelter on a river's beach, just outside a stand of nice trees. (Oops)

It's too funny.

Not that I'm anything close to an outdoors expert, but thinking the river would be where all the animals from the mountain (like bears, mountain lions) would come down for water, making you an easy target for attack.

1. When it rains, his shelter will get washed away.

2. The trees will impede his flight from the water.

3. Between the trees and the water is a major traffic route for all the local bugs and animals.

4. Close to the water is the coldest, dampest place he could find.

5. He is obstructing animals' access to the water and they might get annoyed. In the Rockies that could include Grizzlies and you don't want to annoy Grizzlies. That could be fatal.

6. He's just proved himself to be an idiot or a city boy who has never been anywhere wilder than a park.

Indeed, not to mention in the woods he could have made a better shelter much easier. (Right nehind him was a nice dense stand of younger willows.) He would have had a much easier time staying dry. He would have found it easier to locate food supplies.

All survival usually takes is a little thought and a little knowledge.

Maybe so, but whithout the knowledge part, you can think with the best of them, and still fail. I can see why he chose that place, if I disregard a handful of theoretical knowledge bits that I happen to have. In a context where he has the right knowledge, be it scuba diving or wall street smarts, the same degree of thinking would probably produce excellent results, where others would fail.

So no, I don't see the comedy in him being ill informed. Unless he struck a pose and claimed to know his wildlife stuff.

He has an entire series based on his survival skills.

Some of what he showed was interesting and usefull, like looking inside fallen wood for dry wood for starting a fire.

His eating a Mushroom even while claiming not to be a specialist on mushrooms was downright dangerous. (Not to mention stupid.)

I also watched him walk past several sources of food without even mentioning or noticing them.

His pushing his pack filled with camera equipment into a cleft in the rock first then crawling in after it to take shelter for the night was also stupid. (Either pull the pack in after you to shield you against wind or open it out and lay on it to keep you off the bare rock which will also help to keep you warm.
