Today I was able to be highly insulting to one of my R.N.'s and get away with it.
I was walking a patient in the halls today. Walking her to keep her from developing either Pneumonia or Blood Clots in her legs. She is a patient who happens to be at a high risk for this because of her disease. (Sickle Cell Anemia)
We had walked quite a ways when she developed a cramp/severe pain in one of her legs. I had this young woman, who happens to be 25 and about the size of one of my legs, put her arm around my shoulder and was supporting her as she struggled back towards her room.
We stopped at the Nurses Station to give her a bit of a break, to allow her to get off her feet for a minute. While there one of the R.N.'s watched in shock as I massaged the cramp from my patients leg, but then went on to wipe away her tears of pain. (I also massaged her shoulders for a couple of minutes to try and get her to relax a little bit.)
When the patient was ready to continue I helped her to stand and had her arm around my shoulder again. I was happy with this arrangment because when she put weight on the leg that had cramped it collapsed beneath her. Not only was I able to stop her from falling, I was able to get her back to her room by the simple act of scooping her up and carrying her. This of course was watched by the rest of the staff as well as several M.D.'s.
After I had gotten her settled in, and her R.N. had medicated her, I returned to the Nurses Station to retrieve some paperwork. While there I was confronted by the shocked R.N. It seems my actions had not only shocked her, they had outraged her. I was allowed to stand there and listen as she berated me for being too intimate with my patient. I was allowed to stand there as she informed me, in front of the rest of the staff and Doctors, (including the patients Doctor) how she would be keeping her eye on me to make sure I never did anything untoward with one of my female patients because she knew how men thought and reacted to young women in dependant positions. She also informed me that I was being stupid because we all know how certain types of people will do anything including befriending those with an agenda in an attempt to get more drugs.
I stood there and endured this for more than ten minutes before she finally decided I was suitably awed by her overwhelmingly higher social status and intelligence she turned to leave.
She didn't even register what I said until the rest of the staff, including the Doctors and the Unit Manager started laughing.
"Once again Orwell is proven correct."
