This "scholar" is supposed to be making a declaration to his fellow Muslims. He isn't, he's making a declaration to the West about those naughty terrorists, when he should be in his native country making such a statement against radical violence as a member of such a society. It only makes this guy look worse, totally neuters anything he's trying to accomplish in the radical/impoverished parts of the Muslim world.

But at the same time you can't achieve anything if you go straight to someone who's gonna stop you speaking full stop!

Never having heard of Dr Tahir ul-Qadri before today, I googled the guy and came up with quite a resume and a seriously impressive CV.

Academic career

* 1978-1983: Lecturer (Islamic Law), Punjab University Law College, Lahore

* 1986-2001: Chancellor The Minhaj University (Pakistan), Professor of Islamic Law for Master Classes (TMU)

And that's just the start. The guy has been in Pakistan pretty much all of his life, where he is a respected and accepted Islamic scholar. So much for fearing going back to Pakistan.

As for why he chose the UK to present his fatwa (judgment) against terrorism, my guess is that it had something to do with his ongoing efforts around the globe to reach out to Muslims who are being mislead by the al-Qaeda types. He's published over 360 books, has delivered over 5000 lectures (in Urdu, English and Arabic) and if you know anything about Islamic Scholarship authority (my guess is no), he has more than 150 Chains of Authority contained in two of his own thabats (reference books on his chains of authority).
