Atb this time of year I have to run a quiz to follow the formal part of a club's Annual General Meeting.

I have a few problems because I have no idea how long the AGM will last. My quiz has to fill in the remaining time. For some reason more people come to the AGM than to normal social meetings. Is it the attraction of my quiz? Or the prospect of fireworks at the AGM?

I thought I'd share some of the questions with you, to see how AH members would score on my quiz. So here's the first set:

NORSE

01. What was the home of the Scandanavian Gods called?

02. What was Valhalla? It isn’t the answer to the previous question.

03. What Old English poem tells about a hero who fought a monster called Grendel?

04. What is the name of the world tree? Spelling can be approximate.

05. Who were the maiden messengers of Odin?

06. Who wrote an Opera about them?

07. Who is Thursday named for?

08. And Friday?

09. What killed Baldur?

10. Who is Wednesday named for?

I'm a dumb American and can't answer any of that questions.

Except 7....that was Thor, right?

Sure of all except 3 and 6. Which aren't really about Norse mythology.

I'm not giving away any answers yet. The next part of the quiz will stump many Brits:

Place this.

WHEN THEY WERE BUILT, in which county or city where these buildings?

01. Greenwich Hospital?

02. The White Tower of the Tower of London?

03. Kits Coty House?

04. Hampton Court?

05. Harewood House?

06. Hatfield House?

07. Eltham Palace?

08. Buckingham Palace?

09. Leeds Castle?

10. Battle Abbey?

Those questions, and the category, are from The Gilbert Harding Question Book published in 1956 and intended for children aged under 11. :D

Thanks for ruining everyone's fun, RGraham. I would've gotten all but number 9, now no one will believe I have mythology street cred.

Another section of the quiz (It is for a pensioners' group!):

rgraham666 has the correct answers to the "Norse" questions.

Og

Not quite! Half of the fallen go to Vallhalla, the other half got to the goddess Freyja's field, Fólkvangr. (Actually, Odin and Freya select alternately, so the possible matter of an odd number of heros isn't really a problem.)

By the way, what was the item the dwarves gave Freya for her good houskeeping award and what was its name?

A correct answer earns the rank of Modern Major General.

Im thinking it was the golden necklace... along with a bunch of nasty kissin'

Just when I was starting to feel relatively confident in my intelligence, I read this thread. I'd have failed the quizzes, miserably.

I did like the question about the duke who came with his own personal drummer. Could you imagine a drummed fanfare when you reached your sexual satisfaction?

What, that's not what it means to "come with [a] personal drummer?!" :D

Hahaha! nice Mac where are those damn drummers when you need them!

Every year the pensioners' group complain that my quizzes are too hard.

Yet each year they ask me to do two?

"The personal drummer" ends the opera by marrying the Duke's daughter. If the Duke had come with the personal drummer, his future son-in-law, it might have shocked Victorian audiences...

Og

P.S. But Gilbert was renowned for shocking audiences. In Iolanthe every male ends up as a fairy, except the one that started as "half-a-fairy" down to the waist.
