"I'm sorry ma'am but I'm going to have to look under your blouse before I let you on the plane. Have to make sure you don't have anything under there that could be used to hijack it."

Hijacking threads is what makes it interesting.

You start off on a thread about kinky sex with alcoholic midgets and end up on the merits of semen as a facial cleanser.(1)

(1) is PURELY a dreamt up example.DO NOT go searching for the midget alcoholic thread.

Yes, but it requires a lot of pressure applied to the trigger before it goes off.

Tattoo Exhibit Delves Under The Skin
22/03/2002 06:54 AM
Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - King George V and Popeye had one. Soccer star David Beckham and supermodel Naomi Campbell have got one too.

Tattoos are a key accessory for today's celebrities, but their associations in the last 200 years have often been with the criminal underworld and life on the seas. A new exhibition previewed in London on Thursday traces the art of body decoration in the Pacific back thousands of years.

It was only when English explorer Captain James Cook embarked on voyages to the Pacific islands in the late 18th century that the tattoo took off in Europe in a major way. "The people on board those ships were very surprised and impressed by what they saw," said Nicholas Thomas, professor of Anthropology at Goldsmiths College in London and a consultant on the "Skin Deep" exhibition at the National Maritime Museum.

"Many of the sailors found the culture and customs a knockout and expressed their enthusiasm by getting tattooed themselves," he told Reuters. Islanders generally believed tattoos would change the spiritual status of the body, protect it, tell personal histories and increase sexual attraction.

Whatever the sailors believed, their tattoos were soon used against them to identify culprits behind the famous mutiny of the Bounty in 1789 off Tofoa in Tonga. Lieutenant William Bligh, in command at the time, recorded sailors' markings to single out the mutineers in 1794. Master's Mate Fletcher Christian, for example, had a star on his chest.

CRIMINAL ASSOCIATIONS

The mutineers' trial was to presage a long association between tattoos and crime and the underworld. During the 19th century leading figures in society criticised the practice, associating it with the rough life of sailors, port towns and prostitutes, while missionaries travelling in the Pacific sought to discourage it.

One exhibit shows a painting of a young Polynesian woman with "Murderer" tattooed on her face. The woman had killed her husband. Missionaries had urged the local people in the 1840s to punish her with branding. The word appears upside down because the tattooist knelt behind her with her head between his knees.

"At this time some theorists of criminal behaviour believed that modern Europeans who tattooed themselves were 'degenerating' to the condition of 'primitive' people," an exhibition statement said. Heavily tattooed people became attractions at fairs and circuses and by 1890 electric tattooing machines emerged.

"The tattoo has now become fashionable," Thomas said, pointing to a display featuring dozens of pop stars and screen idols who have joined the craze. "They are embracing something that has been marginal. It also reflects people's way of thinking about the body - that it can be changed and moulded through exercise, diet, and, of course, injections of silicon."
