"...of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."

"Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."

Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness ?

Why is our government un- representative of the people ?

On the eve of President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address and days before the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Oxfam predicts a widening wealth gap and points a finger at lobbying for much the of wealth accumulation at the top. The world’s wealthiest 1 percent is likely to control over 50 percent of global wealth by next year, according to the Oxfam report.

In 2014, the 1 percent held 48 percent of global wealth. But that doesn’t mean the other 52 percent was for the rest of us; most of it was controlled by the 20 wealthiest percent, leaving just 5.5 percent of global wealth for 80 percent of the world.

Total wealth for the poorest 50 percent has actually decreased from what it was in 2009, while wealth at the top has doubled (in nominal terms). Just 80 billionaires now control the same wealth as 3.5 billion people.

Why is our government un- representative of American women ?

Paul Ryan’s GOP caucus blocked President Obama’s attempt to mandate paid parental leave in both the public and private sectors here in the US.

2009

Paul Ryan voted against a bill that would have given federal employees four weeks of paid paternity leave. ThinkProgress additionally notes that Ryan proposed cuts to child care subsidies for poor parents:

"The sky-high cost of child care in the U.S. can dwarf a parent’s income, particularly a low-income parent. Child care subsidies help defray that cost, allowing a parent to find a place to leave their children while going to work and knowing that they don’t have to rely on family members or unsafe, unstable arrangements. Without them, however, poor parents can face a tough choice between continuing to work and simply staying home because the cost is too high."

Paul Ryan has often said that more poor people need to be in the workforce and combat what he sees as a “culture problem” where they don’t value work.

Paul Ryan announced that he’d run for Speaker of the House if his Republican colleagues met a list of demands.

On Tuesday night, Ryan told reporters, “I cannot and I will not give up my family time,” adding he “may not be on the road as often as previous speakers.”

Are women counted as people, in The United States of America ?

Women in low-wage jobs, tend to have fewer benefits, closer supervision, and less ability to change their scheduling or pacing at work. That means they may struggle the most to balance the higher demands of work with the demands at home, which they don’t have resources to cover, thus pulling them away from the workforce and higher earnings.

Paul Ryan is against abortion – even if the woman was impregnated by rape or incest.

Ryan has voted against a woman’s right to choose, even in cases of medical emergency, 59 times over his congressional career. As a case in point, in 2011 he co-sponsored the “Sanctity of Human Life Act,” a bill that declared “life begins with fertilization” and that aimed to allow states to outlaw all abortions in all circumstances.

Ryan is against birth control.

You’d think that anti-abortion zealots would support preventing that circumstance before it happens. That’s certainly not the case, though, and Ryan is a classic example of such hypocrisy.

During the 2012 election season, for example, vice presidential candidate Ryan repeatedly swore that, if elected, he would remove birth control from insurance coverage. (And even though more than half of the women taking that medication do so for reasons other than contraception.)

Paul Ryan wants to get rid of Planned Parenthood.

The Wisconsin representative is also against regular medical care for women. That’s clearly evident by his repeated attacks on Planned Parenthood, which provides reduced-cost (and sometimes free) care to women’s health needs.

For the record, only three percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are for abortion, and 34 percent are provision of birth control. The remaining 63 percent of the work done by Planned Parenthood – a notable majority – pertains to cancer screening, gynecological testing, and similar services.

Paul Ryan is against equal pay.

Gender is not supposed to be a deciding factor when it comes to pay rates, but it still happens, and even though laws pertaining to such discrimination have been on the books for over 50 years. In fact, men are paid 22 percent more than women get, and for the same jobs.

Try telling that to Paul Ryan, though, whose voting record clearly indicates he discriminates against women. For example, he voted against the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. He voted against improvements to employment discrimination laws – not once, but twice. He voted multiple times against the Paycheck Fairness Act, too, claiming it would be harmful on the economy.

Wonkette's observation

"Given that the Republican Party has, at this point, officially broken Congress, and the Nov. 3 deadline to raise the debt limit is fast approaching, with the whole world facing potential economic disaster if they don’t (but hey, no big, take your time, fellas), it seemed like sucking it up and accepting the reality of Speaker Ryan was the only possible option left for the GOP."

Wisconsin Republican Paul Ryan has officially entered the House speaker race, saying in a letter to colleagues, "After talking with so many of you, and hearing your words of encouragement, I believe we are ready to move forward as a one, united team." His announcement came after securing the support of three disparate House Republican groups.

gsgs comment-

The main objection of a few Republicans was that Paul Ryan would not be available for what they considered the most important duty of being a Speaker-
attending fundraisers!

It is a possibility, for Paul Ryan to fly to fundraisers from home, since they are mostly
not in Washington, DC

Wonkette's take on what happened

Paul.Ryan had reluctantly agreed to run for speaker of the House, on the condition that the three main Republican caucuses —
the Tuesday Group (“moderate” Republicans, LOL)
the Republican Study Committee (batshit crazy conservatives)

and the House Freedom Caucus (BATSHIT CRAZY-ASS CRAZY CONSERVATIVES)
— line up and blow him.

The House Freedom Caucus

The House Freedom Caucus members met with him and decided to support him, but only if he agreed to their conditions that he back down, abandon his own conditions and, to quote ourselves, since we put it so eloquently the first time, “look like a giant fucking pussy.”

No trouble from the Republican women folk

The 23 female GOP House lawmakers will announce Thursday they plan to vote for the Wisconsin Republican when the House casts ballots for a new speaker next week.
