Welcome.

I'd like to start a "game/story" in the universe of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. But it won't be your usual Call of Cthulhu "Chop the tentacle and run" adventure. I'd like to create more of a story, than an adventure. But wait, there's more! The main assumption is that this'd be an epistolary story - that is: there is no Game Master, and the players create the story, through writing letters to each other. This is not my original idea, cause it was published in Poland as a 'New Wave RPG' called "De Profundis".

OK, but how would it be played? First, one of the players (probably me) writes a letter to another player (who might be a friend or an acquaintance of his) in which he describes an unusual event that he has partaken in. In this letter he might ask his acqauintance a favor - e.g. to look for some info or somenthing, or to investigate this bizzarre happening. Then, the person sends an answer, for example, directing him to another acquaintance, who could help him, and so on, and so forth, until they will uncover the secret, solve the problem and such. To clarify the matter a little bit more, think of the Lovecraft's story Whisperer in Darkness in which the two main characters meet only at the very end of the story (well, in ain't exactly the truth, but I don't want to spoil it for those who hadn't read this story). The whole plot is unfolded through writing letters, which is very interesting, because this creates isolation and atmosfear (pun intended). I hope that we'll be able to recreate at least some of the atmosphere that Lovecraft made.

Please post the ideas and backgrounds of your characters. Make them as real as possible, think of how they look, how they act, what do they fear, what do they dream of, what do they do in their spare time and such. Oh, and we'll be playing in the States in 1920s (I'm thinking of East Coast - NY, Boston, New England, but it could be anywhere - but do take into consideration that it takes time for a letter to come from e.g. China to New York).

I'd like to start in a week from now (if there will be enough people willing to participate) - on friday the 12th. Hope the weather will be dreary and gloomy :)

If you got any questions, then don't hesitate - ask!

And BTW, I'd like you to remember, ladies and gentelmen, we are the intellectual elite of 1920s Boston, New York, Arkham, or whereever you wish to come from - so, may our language reflect this, ok :)?

Have a nice week, spent on thinking of your characters.

PS. And if you think you have a great idea for a start of our story, PM me - I don't necessarily have to be the one to start!

To start off, I shall post the background of my character. Feel free to make him an acquaintance of your characters, but state where do you know him from.

William Ford

William Ford is 26 years old bibliophile - books are the essence of his life.

His father is a lawyer in Baton Rouge, Lousiana, who wanted his son to follow his footsteps, but William refused and severed ties to his family. He moved to Boston at the age of 17, where he continued studying and then applied to Miskatonic University in Arkham, Mass.

Last year, he finished studies in Clasical Literature and moved back to Boston where he took a massive loan to start his book store, which sells rare and antique titles. He is not a mogul on the market, his most priced possesion is the second edition of Cervantes' "Don Quixote" from 1620. Other than that, his store doesn't have any remarkable titles. The store is called "Ford's Rara Avis"

Ford gathers his books by looking through obituaries and checking
whether a known collector hasn't passed away. Then, he visits his family, offering to buy some books at "very interesting" prices. He takes advantage of the "victim's" lack of knowledge and buys the titles at very low prices - but the victim thinks he offers a nice sum.

OK, that'll be all. If I think of something, I'll add it.

Come join the fun! :)

I like your idea; very similar to what I was hoping to create with my Dairies thread (which I am now happy is a solo thing) and the book I'm writing. (Which is written in the style of Dracula with letters and dairies.)

However, I am in a bit of a slump right now writing wise. I've been neglecting the threads I'm on while dealing with home issues.

But I wanted to give you a :rose: of support for a great idea!

Thank you, Polite! <blushmode> That's very nice </blushmode>.

If this works out, feel free to join in anytime... I think it will be possible to join even in the middle of everything. Hope to see you here!

And a :rose: for you too.
