A Grand Prairie, Texas, Burger King is being sued for religious discrimination after a Christian teen wasn't allowed …A Texas teenager is suing Burger King for religious discrimination, saying that the fast food giant fired her, a conservative Christian, for wearing a long skirt, rather than uniform pants, to work.

Ashanti McShan was a 17-year-old high school senior when she applied for a job as a cashier at the Grand Prairie Burger King in August 2010, according to the lawsuit filed on her behalf this week by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. During her interview McShan, who is a Pentacostal Christian, said that her religious beliefs forbid women to wear men's clothing, so she would need to be able to wear a long back skirt rather than the standard-issue uniform pants. The Burger King employee interviewing her "assured her that she could wear a skirt to work," the lawsuit says.

But when she arrived for orientation, another store management told her that she could not wear a skirt "and that she had to leave the store," in spite of her explaining that there was a religious issue at stake, according to the lawsuit.

"The result of the foregoing practices has been to deprive Ashanti McShan of equal employment opportunities because of her religious beliefs and observances as a Christian Pentecostal," the lawsuit states. The incident could be a violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars religious discrimination in the workplace.

"I've seen cases where an employer has denied a religion accommodation, and its something where you could see how it could cause a problem," Equal Employment Opportunity Commission trial attorney Meaghan Shepard, who is representing McShan, told The Dallas Morning News. "The legal standard is 'undue hardship,' and in this instance it was a very simple request -- to be able to wear a long black skirt and not black pants -- and it was initially granted. And then she shows up at orientation, on time, and is then told by the manager to leave and that she couldn't wear a skirt. She was responsible, tried to get in touch with someone higher in the franchise, and they never responded to her. In our eyes, it was so clear-cut. She's a very sweet, articulate young lady who was just trying to work her senior year in high school."

The lawsuit seeks "appropriate back pay with prejudgement interest" for McShan, even though she was asked to leave the store before she started her first shift, as well as punitive damages and an injunction.

"Accommodating Ms. McShan's religious beliefs would have been simple and cost the company nothing," Shepard said in a statement. "Management's failure to comply with federal law deprived this teenage girl of the opportunity to work during her senior year of high school."

Pentacostal Christians believe in a strict, literal interpretation of the Bible. Deuteronomy 22:5 specifically states: "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the Lord thy God."

"We haven't come far enough in our respect of religious liberties at the workplace if we have employers saying that uniform policies trump a religious observance without articulation of any hardship posed by letting an employee 'hold the pickles' and 'hold the lettuce' while wearing a skirt," EEOC regional attorney Robert A. Canino said in a statement.

The franchisee that owns the Great Prairie Burger King, Fries Restaurant Management LLC, also owns about 10 other Burger King restaurants in Texas; they would not comment to Yahoo! Shine. "As a normal couse of business, Burger King Corp. does not comment on personnel or legal matters related to its franchisees, who independently own and operate Burger King restaurants," Burger King Corp. told The Huffington Post in a statement.

If they are I don't see how she can claim religious discrimination since she's claiming it's based on a literal interpretation of the bible and she wouldn't be able to wear the BK shirt, which I'm guessing is a requirement of employment.

In any case, I doubt it's Burger King, probably some pimply faced local "manager".

I have not been to a Burger King in years. Probably the same manager that called the cops on a buddy of mine claiming he gave him a forged $100 bill. That manager did not even apologize for his stupidity or offer to comp the meal.

It's obvious NONE of those who agree with her have worked in the restaurant or fast food industries. A long skirt is dangerous to wear. It does NOT give the wearer's legs total range of leg movement, and can cause a safety issue.

She was fired because she did not follow the dress code, which was given to her on the day she was hired. She was fired for insubordination, not because of her religious beliefs.

Not gonna happen. Any time you have a job dealing directly with the public; management/owners CAN dictate what you wear. A friend of mine works at Tiffany's. she can not wear jeans and sell jewerly... (Not that she would want to.)...

Imane Boudlal, a former hostess at a Disney-owned restaurant is suing the company, claiming that she was not allowed to wear her Islamic headscarf while at work. According to her lawsuit, which was filed on Monday, Boudlal says that when she showed up wearing her hijab, she was told to take it off. If she chose not to do so, her other options were to stay out of customers’ sights or — to go home.

According to The Daily Mail, the issue took form in 2010 when the woman was working at Storyteller Café inside Disney’s Grand California Hotel. She had learned while taking her U.S. citizenship exam that it is permissible for her to wear a head scarf to work and, thus, she decided to start doing so. While she hadn’t yet enjoyed this supposed right during her first two years working at the restaurant, she subsequently began wearing it to work.

It was then that Boudlal’s clash with Disney began, as she was reportedly sent home numerous times without pay when she showed up wearing the headscarf. The situation intensified when she refused to wear a bow-tie bonnet and a hat that was offered to her as a cover-up by her bosses; she also declined the option to work “back stage” and out of sight. At that point, she was suspended.

A Wegmans grocery store near Rochester, NY now has a sharia compliant check out line. The sign instructs customers with pork or alchohol products to go to a different line. So, if every customer goes to a different line, why are they paying the clerk with no customers?

The sign went up a week ago at their Lyell Avenue store.

Wegmans says they haven’t gotten any in store complaints and Wegmans was very upfront about the cashier. They just wouldn’t allow us in the store to talk with her or customers.

The reporter spoke to customers outside and they said they didn’t mind.

I don’t know if the Wegmans near my house has a sharia line. I stopped going there years ago when they expanded the store. It’s too big and crowded. It took too long to get through my shopping with the kids in tow. Every now and then Mr. LC will shop there because he likes the olive bar. I’ll have to ask him the next time he goes if they have a sharia line here in Dewitt.

Here’s a question: If it’s okay for Muslims to pick and choose what customers they wait on, why is it also okay to force Catholic institutions to pay for birth control, sterilization and abortion drugs?
