Things are getting better in the economy based on how most of my friends and family's companies are doing. The retail and real estate sectors are still somewhat soft, which is obviously a concern, but should bounce back as the economy goes through its natural cycle.

“Probably the jobs picture is not going to improve considerably, and it could even get a little bit worse, over the next couple of months,” Obama said today in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “We lost so many jobs that making up for those that have already been lost is going to require really high growth rates.”

The unemployment rate reached 9.7 percent in August, a quarter-century high, and employers have eliminated almost 7 million jobs since the recession started, the biggest drop in any post-World War II economic downturn. Banks worldwide have recorded more than $1.6 trillion of losses and writedowns since the start of 2007, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Under these circumstances, what would you like him to say? Would you like him to tell you he's going to wave his magic wand and put everyone back to work? He's been trying to put people back to work by bailing out Detroit and the financial system, and he's been getting shit for it.

I knew he was doomed when he waded into the sewer Bush left him, but I am still amazed at the criticism he keeps getting, especially coming from people who should know better.

That would have been an interesting approach. I haven't seen any reputable economists do an analysis on how that would have worked versus the approach they did take. Have you? It's one thing to armchair-quarterback after the fact, it's another to actually show how a populist theory would pan out in an economy with no financial services in place to accept all that money (since the purpose of the bailouts was to avoid a total collapse of the financial system.)

The bail-out saved the asses of everyone who seriously fucked up in one way or another. They rolled the dice and lost. So they got their money back and suffered nothing from the experience. if they had gone bankrupt many of them would have jumped off buildings or been murdered by their clients or have to get real jobs. Can you imagine Caroline Kennedy cleaning rooms at MOTEL 6?

We coulda replaced billions of dollars worth of old shit state and local governments make-do with. There is maybe 10 TRILLION worth of old schools and old bridges and old dams and crappy roads.

We coulda given every child in America a free college education. We coulda given everyone free health insurance for years.

But what we did was re-fill the fatcats wallets.

So, you're saying that the UAW workers who staff plants in America are actually taking a secret bus to Canada every day? Interesting.

I would also invite you, Jenny, to find us a link to an economic analysis of the effectiveness of doing nothing when faced with the total collapse of the American economy. Between you and JBJ, perhaps you can present some actual evidence to hammer Obama with, instead of just succumbing to the knee jerk reaction that Obama and the Congress screwed up in their efforts to rescue the USA from the Bush Crash.

The commentary I've seen suggests that the bailout was effective in avoiding another Great Depression. What I haven't seen is actual numbers. If you have access to them, please enlighten us. I'm not talking about JBJ's reference to 10 years worth of free healthcare, I'm talking about the affect of allowing the financial system to collapse, and following that by an infusion of cash into a dysfunctional financial system. Specifically, how do you buy food, or put gas in your car when your bank card doesn't work? How do you get paid at work when your boss can't access his account? This is what a total collapse of the financial system would look like. Would that have been better than what we ended up with?

I would agree that the American political system is staffed by complete idiots, but lumping Obama in with the rest of them seems a bit disingenuous. He seems to have more common sense then most of them, although I would agree that he's too pragmatic to be effective in the corrupt system he is forced to navigate. What you have to realize is, Obama is trying to govern from the center - you know, keeping the independents happy. I see this as his biggest failing. Governing from the middle is sort of like bowing to the lowest common denominator. You make the maximum number of people happy, while ignoring the fact that the people you're pleasing are a bunch of clueless sheep enraptured by the latest propaganda blitz that may or may not have any relevance whatsoever to the actual world they live in.
