Washington ready to negotiate with Mullah Omar

Washington is ready to negotiate with Taliban leader Mullah Omar and now regards his involvement as crucial to the prospects for peace in Afghanistan, Hillary Clinton has said.

Her comments been taken as a significant shift in American policy from moves to divide the Taliban-led insurgency and isolate Mullah Omar, the man who sheltered Osama bin Laden as he plotted the September 11 attacks, to an acknowledgement of his leadership.

Rest of the story here:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...gton-ready-to-negotiate-with-Mullah-Omar.html

After more than 2,790 coalition deaths - of which more than 1,829 Americans were killed - in a "war" that almost all thought was the one worth fighting...

...the President of the United States of America has decided it's time to acknowledge the leadership of one of the primary terrorists of 9/11 and make peace with him and his Taliban comrades.

Lovely...

...can't just leave the hellhole, we have to formally cede authority to our enemy.

Such is the devastating emptiness of "war" that never really was...

...and the needless deaths and injuries to so many thousands who were willing to give their lives to conquer those who took part in committing the most devastating attack on American soil.

RIP heroes: you did your part and so much, much more...

...as always, it is politicians who betray your honor.

I'm feeling quite pleased thank you. We can't fight them forever, it's not just wasteful it's stupid. I'm a Marine and served in Iraq. There is co-existing with these people. Just like there's co-existing with Germans, Japanese, and Indians. Somebody always has to take the first step and really it needs to be the bigger man. We can take their best shot and shrug it off, they can't take us focusing our gaze on them.

Just stop. There are better things to be worried about.

Good token idea, but it is NOT going to happen. Been against the US way handling of this from day one. I have felt this way long Before Obama or Bush. We (US and, in many ways, the Europeans) have never nor will ever understand the people of the middle east.

I say leave them alone, fuck it. Let the bastards kill themselves in the name of whatever Gods they prey to and stay the fuck away from us. And us away from them. Like it or not people, the US and anyone depending upon US 'success' there played a major role in instigating the Taliban retaliation against us.

I agree. We've done all we can do there. Getting rid of the Taliban completely would mean pounding Afghanistan into dust on a brutal scale that would make the Soviets look cuddly, perhaps even dragging ourselves into war with Pakistan. But that's not us.

We've run the Taliban out of power. We've done our best to make sure that elections installed who the Afghan people really want. We've eliminated most everyone on our "to do" list. Anything more is pointless. It's time to dust off and go.

But there's a difference between calling it a day and "negotiating."

What the hell does Obama think is worth reaching out with diplomatic relations to the Taliban for? All it can possibly do is give those bloodthirsty SOBs undeserved validation.

What? Are we going to give them a stern, "Now don't you do anything when we're gone!" speech?

Agreed. I concur wholeheartedly. Enough is enough for all of us.

Every real warrior loves life in the gladiator arena and the stench of his opponents blood. The Marines need to stop recruiting Candy Asses.

search=quagmire

I've been advocating since he was elected that now was the perfect time to bug out because Osama wasn't there and we were at war with al Qaeda, not the Taliban.

I guess that makes me some sort of traitor...

So should troops remain in Afghanistan until they all convert to Christianity?

Troops have to leave some time, wake up.

Where did I say otherwise? I specifically said it's time to go. We've done all we can do.

I just can't imagine why Obama feels the need to reach out a diplomatic hand to the stinking Taliban before we leave. It's a huge disservice to our troops, who've been getting picked off, one Taliban-planted IED and suicide bomber at a time, for years now. We shouldn't even be giving them the time of day as we leave.

God dammit people are stupid today. Never, EVER listen to what the Telegraph has to say. It's an ultra-conservative piss-rag that constantly misinforms.

Let's try CNN, which will tell us what Hillary actually said and not lie by omission:

There first would have to be a demonstrated willingness on the Taliban's part to negotiate and to meet the conditions already laid out for joining negotiations, she said.

"We have been clear," she had told the committee earlier, "about the necessary outcomes of any negotiation: Insurgents must renounce violence, abandon al Qaeda, and abide by the constitution of Afghanistan, including its protections for women and minorities. If insurgents cannot meet those red-lines, they will face continued and unrelenting assault."

But she said it is important for an inclusive Afghan-led peace and reconciliation process, in which the parties talk to former insurgents who are ready to renounce violence.

Eyer, Ellie, James, KK, Vette, AJ, you're all so fucking easily misled. It's really hard to believe how gullible you are.

Taliban kill 17 in brazen attack on US in Kabul

October 31, 2011

KABUL: At least 17 people, including 12 Americans, were killed when a Taliban suicide car bomber attacked an armoured bus in Kabul, officials said.

The bombing on Saturday was the single deadliest assault on Americans in the capital since the war began and follows brazen Taliban attacks on the US embassy and NATO headquarters in the city last month.

Nothing on this from the righties? You were misinformed by your beloved right wing sources again... And no response? You just keep going back to them why?

Like a good apparatchik, you're conditioned not only to to believe anything the Liberal-Minority Coalition tells you, but to recite it fervently as well. Have you ever thought about guiding tourists in Pyongyang?

No, chucklehead. All I did was read Secretary Clinton's quote directly. I haven't heard any left wing commentary of any sort on the matter (is there any?).

I just nailed you all again by going directly to the source. Unless you have some facts of your own, you're done here.

I've got something.

You're a fucking idiot, all you ever do is ad hominem straw men.

Go back and read what I said.

:) Stupid is as Stupid does; that's what mama always said. Have a Nice Day.

Diplomatic boiler plate.

She also made her comments after the story was broken.

It follows the disclosure earlier this month that American officials had met leaders of the Haqqani Network, the powerful Taliban faction blamed for some of the most devastating attacks on American and Nato forces in Afghanistan, including last month's attack on the US embassy in Kabul in which seven were killed and 19 wounded.

Earlier this week the faction's commander Sirajuddin Haqqani warned Washington that only the Quetta Shura, led by Mullah Omar, could negotiate a peace deal and that his fighters would not be divided from its leadership.

In an appearance before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Mrs Clinton said the United States would continue to "fight, talk and build" in Afghanistan and Pakistan to "test whether these organisations have any willingness to negotiate in good faith".

As we can clearly see, all the facts were laid out in the original story and your story does nothing to change them, so your outrage is somewhat comical for a guy who insists he is independent and reasoned.

:) Shit Happens!
