The Obama administration on Thursday defended its creation of a Twitter-like Cuban communications network to undermine the communist government, declaring the secret program was "invested and debated" by Congress and wasn't a covert operation that required White House approval.
But two senior Democrats on congressional intelligence and judiciary committees said they had known nothing about the effort, which one of them described as "dumb, dumb, dumb." A showdown with that senator's panel is expected next week, and the Republican chairman of a House oversight subcommittee said that it, too, would look into the program.
An Associated Press investigation found that the network was built with secret shell companies and financed through a foreign bank. The project, which lasted more than two years and drew tens of thousands of subscribers, sought to evade Cuba's stranglehold on the Internet with a primitive social media platform.
First, the network was to build a Cuban audience, mostly young people. Then, the plan was to push them toward dissent.
Yet its users were neither aware it was created by a U.S. agency with ties to the State Department, nor that American contractors were gathering personal data about them, in the hope that the information might be used someday for political purposes.
It is unclear whether the scheme was legal under U.S. law, which requires written authorization of covert action by the president as well as congressional notification. White House spokesman Jay Carney said he was not aware of individuals in the White House who had known about the program.

...now, I really have no problem at all with President Obama okaying action which seeks to undermine any communist government in the world, but using freedom-seeking individuals as nothing but political pawns is a tyrannical game itself.
Jay Carney should be out of a job tomorrow for intentionally lying to the American people, and the President best get out ahead of this deal by spilling the truth and taking whatever hits he must, not for this illegal action (Communist Cuba's government is legit per the UN), but for the deplorable way(s) he sought to use individuals for sheer political gain.
Does Barrack Obama actually fantasize that he can even hope to get away with basically what Vladimir Putin illegally just did, and then be saluted simply because he didn't use forceful military intimidation?
President Obama authorizes the drone deaths of American citizens without obeying the Fifth Amendment, which was specifically included within the Bill of Rights to protect against such tyrannical abuse by government (btw: none of those Americans had ever wielded a gun against another American and, in fact, 75% of Americans unconstitutionally killed by Obama-authorized drone attacks were not authorized by Obama to be targeted at all)...
...and the number of fully innocent people USSA drone attacks have killed outnumber the actual targets hit by disgustingly huge amounts.
Alas, the American people allow it still.
President Obama authorizes the full scope of National Security Agency (NSA) intelligence gathering and retention activities that cabal of lies, deception, and deceit incessantly orchestrates...
...yet, the President's supporters don't hold him fully responsible for his command of the Agency, and don't seem at all interested that he be held fully accountable for his intentional and flagrant violation(s) of the Fourth Amendment.
How many freedom seekers were slaughtered and died during the infamous Arab Spring, all that dissent intentionally and fully egged-on by President Obama's authorizations being carried out - just like in the Communist Cuba story above - by the State Department and its innumerable shadow insurgency puppets?
History is littered with tyrants who expose their true nature in sating their statist appetites by the ways they all must devalue individual human life and intentionally dismiss the inalienable rights every human being naturally possesses..
...President Obama, the 2nd President of the United Socialist State of America, has proven by his anti-individual liberty actions to be, at least, a worthy member of that despicable club.
And, so, so sadly...
...most Americans don't seem to mind that very much at all.
