NYTimes Article: "Donald Trump's Big Gay Gay Government"

I discovered this on the NYTimes webpage yesterday. One especially interesting line: "No one is meaner to gay people than other gay people." I've found that to be true. Why is it that so many believe that being gay and conservative is a mutually exclusive proposition when even the NYTimes suggests there are now many conservative gays happily working in DC?
