Thats great news. I often wondered how they got away with it - those that hid the evidence that is. Why weren't they charged with anything...an accessory after the fact at the very least.
The should never have been allowed to hide behind the church.
I am SO pissed. The curches to main concerens are and have been: A. The money it is costing them
B. The tarnishing of thier image.
These bastards have very little to no concern about the people they supposedly serve. Of course this is the same chuch that financed Hitler till 1940 or so. I truly hate the Catholic Church. Not the worshipers but the Aristocracy that rules it. They are evil...
I am getting angry just thinking about them.
As a survivor of severe molestation in my childhood Im glad to see that the powers that be are going after these people especially Cardinal Law. The long term effects that the victims endure continue well in to adulthood. The Priests who did the molesting are some sick fucks, You would think that they might have realized that little boys grow up to be men with memories.
No. I am Catholic and yes, agree that whoever propagated the problem needs to be prosecuted.
Even those who "harbor" the criminals.
The scandal has so soiled the church and Catholic priests in general, that swift and concise action needs to be taken.
First: punitive
Second: the church needs to make some significant changes in policy. I.E. consider allowing priest to marry. Would this solve the problem ? NO. But it may help a bit.
And frankly, there will always be molesters in the churches, as there are anywhere where children engage in trusting relationships with adults. Pedophiles are methodical thinkers and place themselves in these positions. Sad, but true.
But, legal action would certainly entice the church to do more about the problem than protect the priests who perpetrate. Or, I would hope so!
These bastards would have continued doing nothing.
They have to debate a "one strike your out" policy? Hello? What does that tell you about the culture involved? In his Easter adress of 22 pages there was a short paragraph concerning this issue. What it basically was about was the pope being concerned about people losing faith in the church. Not one fucking word about the victims was to be found.
The sad fact is that it was/is an accepted part of the church from the hierarchy's point of view. The ONLY reason they are addressing it now is the press and the fact they are losing millions to settle lawsuits. They dont give a damn about the harm they caused or the worshipers well being. They are merely a revenue source. Period!
To not discuss religion or politics on boards. However, we are talking about serial criminals and those that obstruct justice to harbor them. In the name of God no less...
I'm not Catholic, but a Catholic friend of mine had an interesting theory. He claims that this is mostly an American problem. Italian, Spanish and French priests all have lady friends on the side when they get the urge. He says it's the "Mick Factor"--all our priests are Irish. Only an Irishman could feel so guilty and screwed up about sex that he'd molest altar boys.
In any event, the Church has to stop being hypocritical about sexuality. More than half of the Jesuits are homosexual. The Jesuits, for crying out loud! Aren't they supposed to be the intellectual ones, the vanguard? If so, watch for heterosexuality to be declared a heresy.
It's not a new story at all. Years ago Cardinal Spellman was notorious for screwing altar boys.
My favorite Spellman story: The Cardinal instructed all his bishops to be present at a special mass. This mass was so solemn that all of them had to wear nothing but black. When Spellman made his entrance, he was wearing his gorgeous scarlet and gold. As he went by, one of the bishops hissed, "Bitch!"
Well, the church is riddled by politics, corruption and power hunts.
Frankly, the pain of the families saddens me.
Also, that the nice priest in my church has to face certain looks from some in the community because some asshole hundreds of miles away got away with something as heinous as child sex abuse.
The entire church suffers as does those who are devout and those who do place the well being of their parishoners at the fore front of their mind.
Even sadder, had the perpetrators been treated appropriately, good priests wouldn't have to be placed in a position where they aren't trusted. Without trust, a priest can't do what needs to be done.
I still believe in Catholicism to the same degree I always did. (There is another thread topic in that statement.)
And I believe in Father B who is one of the most holy and devout men I have known.
Unfortunately, because he wears a collar, there will be some who can never benefit from what he offers.
The powers that be have really fucked up this time.
What took so long? Lock up the molesters, I mean, rapist, I mean, priest. And the Bishops that covered up their action. That will reform the Catholic Church in a hurry.
Looking at current events in the spirtual war frame of mind satan pulled a good one this time. He slow cooked it for hundreds of years and no doubt his timing is right to do the max damage.
Children were abused, with life long effects spreading out like a spiders web. How many peoples faith will be affected by all of this we will never know.
He has cast suspicion not only on priest of the catholic church but on every man of the clergy or will before its all over. Thinking about the matter one must consider it's just another crack in the wall.
Notice it bounces back and forth over the years between sex and money and will worship. I saw where a board member posted about priest not serving people as they should.
This is talked about more and more in this modern world. Priest serve God, That is their function. When they start serving man first that allows a door a door to open for satan to slip in.
Before you drag out your flame throwers yes, send the bastads to jail. Yes, kick their asses out of whatever church they are in.
War is war and these people forgot which side they are on.
MissTaken...You made an excellent point...our local priests are having to deal with the treatment by people who think ALL priests are molestors. I have three WONDERFUL priests in my area who are absolutely wonderful. One in particular has given at least three homilies on the subject of the molestations and his role as a priest. He said, "I made three vows when I entered the priesthood. Poverty...chastity...and obedience. In other words, no money, no honey and I have a boss!" That was a great way to lead into one of the most beautiful homilies I have ever heard regarding their vow of chastity and how important that is to most of them. Statistically, there are some 47,000 priests in the United States and the percentage of those that molest are in the 0-1% range.....and that's 1% too many.
My heart goes to the victims and families and I hope they get the justice they so deeply deserve. I love the Church....I love my preists.....but I despise anyone who harms a child. For that, there is no excuse. These men should be arrested and go through the legal system just like anyone else.
Siren....I most definitely think the higher-ups in the Church who covered this up should be held accountable for what they did...I just didn't say that in my earlier post. What they have done is a crime, plain and simple and they should fall under the letter of the law just like the rest of us.
I am Catholic, and I agree totally. Cardinal Law should be defrocked and put in jail even if all he did was knowingly allow pedophile priests to continue molesting children. But no, he did that one better by transferring them, so they could get their sick little hands on some new children. Brilliant idea, Bernard.
The really sad thing is that Catholicism is a religion which believes in humility before God, confession, and forgiveness. Had these been isolated cases, we the faithful would have forgiven them. But instead they chose to lie and cover it up, and the shit storm that comes from this is wholly justified for their actions.
Another bad thing is that Pope John Paul II really doesn't need this, with his health. And whoever inherits the papcy after him will probably still be dealing with it.
