Given the nuclear arsenal and tensions in the 1960's, this is a very accurate simulation of a full-scale global thermonuclear war.
After the exchange of about 15,000 nuclear warheads, about 1,000,000,000 global casualties. The entire planet is blanketed in a thick cloud of radioactive ash for several centuries, the sun is blocked out, crops die, countless cancers, VIPS are transported to continuity of government (CoG) shelters, survivors are left to fend for themselves in a hellish post-apocalyptic wasteland filled with radioactive ash and social chaos.
Tensions and heated disagreements are slowly building between the US, Russia, and China. Also Iran and North Korea has threatened several countries with nuclear weapons. India is in hot water with China and Pakistan.

Important things to have in order to survive a nuclear war include the following. FEMA (the federal emergency and management agency) has contingencies to assist the public in the event of nuclear war.
*Large stockpiles of food and water (enough to last years)
*A small fallout shelter (the government has these only they are hundreds of thousands of square feet and cost billions of dollars to construct)
*Potassium iodine tablets
*Gas masks/anti-radiation gear
*Weapons and ammunition
*Stockpiles of gasoline
*A residence out in a extremely rural community
*A Geiger counter/dosimeter
*Large stockpiles of batteries
*A gas generator (the power grid is likely to have been completely destroyed by a nuclear war)
*A HAM radio
*A kerosene lantern
*Night vision goggles (flashlights will give you away to roving bands of looters in the dark)
*Self-defense/military combat training
*Firearms training
*Learn how to hotwire a car
*Urban and rural survival classes
