short and sweet, you do in direct proportion to the value you add.
Two proper responses to this. (because I'm getting sick of name, name, name, bullshit, bullshit)
Response 1. Yes, I have been a thread whore and a bit of a bullshit artist, so I will try add something of value.
Response 2. 1201 you are so full of shit, because we can't live without our heroes, we are so incomplete.

response 3: you're quite right about the value of input to value of worth ratio (quality over quantity), but - as in any community - this will always be a measurement in flux. there are those who'll value on poster's input where another might think it less than helpful. besides, i'm happier giving credit where it's due than accepting it in return. it's embarrassing!

the hero thing sucketh. *nods* we're all people, we're all flawed. only by accepting this can we stand in the right place to improve on our own writing.

Hmmm, good points all. Criticism makes me better. Praise makes me feel better. I'd rather be better, because that makes me feel the best.

Also, when I get praise from a thread whore who also criticizes, that makes that praise all the more valuable. I've only recently felt competent enough to judge poetry--and judging with critique has improved what I do. It's all a process involving self-confidence and being able to see differences in writing.

If this were simply a suck up site, then I would not improve.

I'd rather have honesty than meaningless praise. If it sucks, tell me it sucks in a productive way. Like, "Hey, this sucks!"

When talented poets, or talented critics suggest, I do listen and judge for myself the merit of what they suggest.

I hope that made sense.

I'll read anything once. I discovered this proclivity as a child with cereal boxes at breakfast time. I moved onto phone books and the fine print in junk mail. I am a readaholic. I'll even read stuff over and over if I like it.

So just say something worthwhile cause I will be reading.

1201 when you first came here you annoyed the bejesus outta me with your endless prodding and questions. But I think the point I initially missed about you and maybe other have, I dunno, is that you are never saying there is one right way and do it a certain way and the poems will be great. You're telling people over and over to study and think about what they're doing when they write.

And I know you value critique like YDD did: honest and not intentionally brutal but sometimes honest just is. And honest is the only opinion worth having.

You can call me an attention whore today because I made a big vanity thread for me and what I'm studying. But I mainly did it to teach myself, to solidify my understanding of what I've been reading. But there are some good ieas there imo that can make one a better poet. But ya still gotta practice.

Anyway you're kind of a bullshit artist but it's not without its charm. :)

Guilty on both counts.
Sometimes it's just the :devil:advocate thing.
Here's a couple of things:jtserra got me to read Silvia Plath. you and others changed my opin. on Wallace Stevens. My brother got me to change my opin. on Lauren Hyde, his quote "you asshole, she's Portuguese, "destiny" means something different to them then it does to a German. Duh, I looked it up. You have to be open to the possibilities.

snap! crackle, and pop.

it takes a lot of reading the 'cereal packets' of life to get a good feel for the worthwhile, but i don't know if there's a better way

exactly. he's a provocateur; the provocateur's role is to stir things up a bit, challenging the thinking of peers in the conversation. ...

agree 100%. doesn't matter a fig if we don't like what's being said so long as it is a genuine and honest response.

i'd sooner call you a poet. an honest poet. oh, and prose-ist, too :D

nothing'd grow without the benefits of shit.

Now if we could just get you into some Sharon Olds...

I enjoy your brutal but friendly ways and respect your opinion in spite of your recent outbreak of rainbow dick.;) There's been a lot of aggro round here of late. I don't know what's going on.:(

Don Moss: ‘Ugh, I’m so sick & tired of that woman’s orifices!’
My question, poetically or otherwise? Don't you think Sharon should have some say in this.
Send her an email, who knows...

Well, I read this column years ago, I did check her out, a lot of it was...so it hinges on the word "into". So, reading her makes me feel like a tampon. I don't like feeling that way. I may be a "bloody mess", but not in that way.
