Last night I was watching an interesting American produced programme about the rise of Saadam and the way he has led Iraq...

Good stuff. Very interesting. There were lots of interviews with previous Inspection teams and 'proof' that Iraq was producing weapons of mass destruction.

Right thought I here's what we are all looking for from our Governments. Something we can hang on to as justification for the coming war...

Then, ever so casually, the American commentator mentioned that after the Gulf War the United Nations declared areas to the North and South of the country as No-Fly Zones which the US and the UK began enforcing...

The UN did no such thing. America and the UK unilaterally declared these zones themselves (along with the French who pulled out after a few days as they were concerned about the legality of the action)...

That one statement alone threw a question mark over the whole programme...

An example of American propaganda or just plain poor research?

I don't know

But so much is topsy turvy, smoke and mirrors, these days. The veil of Maya has grown much thicker than usual. I would think a full acount of the rise of Saddam would mention U.S. support for him throughout much of the 1980's, as he fought theocratic Iran, then considered the greater enemy. A much younger Donald Rumsfeld shook Saddam's hand in 1983 or thereabouts. When he gassed the Kurds in 1988, the U.S. government was behind him all the way.

Which one is next-- Iran or North Korea?

Yes the programme did all that and more...

It was even handed up until the mention of the non-existent UN Resolution...

Or was it? I'm not so sure now...

That's why Iraqis shooting at American and British planes in the no-fly zones weren't material breaches, despite GWB's incessant whining. It also may be why Powell has been forced to present actual proof--people have discovered the term "material breach" isn't universal in meaning.
