You can't pre-position anything without the security to defend it long enough for it to benefit subsequent arriving forces. Basically our overseas bases are a pre-position of those kinds of forces to gain strategic proximity in a given theater of operations. We would not want an 8000 mile supply line from our mainland, in say the defense of Taiwan. That would be better served initially by prepositioned forces on bases in Guam, Okinawa, Japan, and or South Korea.

I think that whole European question should be re-examined strategically to identify and decide if The United States of America has a present day interest in our continued military presence in Europe. I think Trump was right to start the conversation with the NATO countries.

I can think of no better motivator for the European governments to begin strengthening their defenses than a serious contemplation by the US government of an American pull back from the European theater.

We have to remember we do have treaty requirements, trade relations, and lines of communications and supply that we have an interest in protecting.
