I went to the story idea's thread and looked around. Found a commentary on interracial stories and how...well one sided they seem to be to put it short and pleasantly. I determined to write a balanced and way different story for this catagory.

I may have bit off more than I can chew. First I took the time back...waaaay back to 1830's or so. Then, I made a character that for the times...well she borders on unbelieveable.

Understand this one thing as you read this...I hate period stories. I have a hard time getting into them. I do like Louis LaMour westerns, but that's about it. Now here I am...trying to write one.

I have found what could be my limits...and I hate to not finish a story I have worked on.

What does one do to push on and forge ahead when you realize you may be beyond your zone?

SHut your eyes and jump in. I've just signed a four-book deal for a series about Mexico in the 1530s and I know SFA about it. Research is the answer, failing that - guess work.

Running into a hard spot isn't such a bad thing. I just hold my nose and finish it, as bad as it is. I can usually fix it once it's written, and I guess I find rewriting and revising easier than writing it in the first place.

What's bad is when you're lost interest in the piece. I've got a few of those, and I don't know what to do with them.

Research and more research.

I'm with Snooper here. I've just spent 3 weeks researching the next section of my NaNo inspired novel. It takes place in 1970's Portugal, not too far away, but a vastly different country then under a dictatorship fighting colonial wars than it is today as a member of the European Union.

I've visited places, research documents, talked with people. Then you invent, let your imagination loose anchored in fact.

I can see I've gotten so great advice here. heh...sounds kinda familiar too.

I can see that sometimes one needs to have their own eyes opened to advice they may have given out to others. Yes...the correct path is to 'jump in' so to speak and forge ahead. :)
