Novel support thread...

Books with infidelity or characters that have multiple partners tend to fall in the “literary” category or they may fit into another sub genre - something like SFF, horror, or mystery.

The hero can have sex with someone other than the heroine BEFORE he meets her, but after that - only her - not matter what. The same rules apply to the heroine.
The NY houses are slowly letting M/M/F into the mix, but that has to be an exclusive HEA for all three. (now, I’m sure there are a few exceptions, but this is the basic rule)

That is the traditional definition of “Romance” and what the romance publishers are looking for and marketing… it's what sells in mainstream romance. If you go to the publishers submissions pages or read the industry guides, it is very clear that they are looking for HEA… most will not even consider HFN endings yet.

Many of the ebubs have the same rules for erotic romance… However, Ellora’s Cave just added a line called Exotika for those non-HEA stories. They are actively seeking submissions. I believe St. Martins Press is acepting non-HEA erotica as well for a print line.

Stella - if the site is the one I think you mean, it does get busier at times...

See-- this is why we need a forum, because there are other things to talk about besides squabbling about Romance forms!

Sci-fi? Adventure? Picaresques? Mysteries? Names, plots, arcs... fuuuck...

Too true, different people have different concepts of romance and what it takes to make a novel.

While I may consider myself more romance oriented, my story is posted in romance, some may not consider it such. *shrugs* But a forum is a good idea, unfortunately not something I can help with.

Well what if the story starts with two people and they both end up romantically involved with someone else and that isn't discovered until the end of a series? Would that still be considered Romance?
Yes, if it's clear to the reader that they were Meant To Be, and they've both Made A Big Mistake, and she can expect that somehow, some day they'll see the light..

There are plenty of trilogy romances out there...

(EDIT)

I think I misread you, MrsDeathlynx. You're saying the main characters each end up with someone else at the end? I don't think it can be a Romance (as per the category definition) then. Not everything I'm planning will fall into that cat either, I just want to try it.

It's hard to write what has already been written, or to follow the same basic plot over and over and over . . . .

I don't know how Michener did it :p

He did it very well.

Has anyone asked EL is she'd like to host a forum?

Sorry, not here much for the next ten days or so, but would like to encourage this initiative.

Primary concerns:
1) Novel
- break this down every which way but at the end, all writers require serious beta readers who views they value to help finish the job.
2) Getting Published / Agency representation
- query letters
- novel synsopsis
- submission chapter edits
- 'black list' of rip off agents

Much of these functions are available through 'Writer Write', but as someone said, it moves at a snails pace. It can take a week to get a single view of a 'query letter' and too often the advice given smacks of... something other than honest opinion.

I'd rather work with people I know and trust to be honest.

The thriller. I've made noise about opening the Romantic/Thriller a couple of times. No response to day.

That's as near to the genre as I write. ;)

Happy to discuss this area, as I'm sure others would be, just have RL time constraints for next ten days.
