how come poems don't get many votes? I mean the most votes I've gotten in a poem were 6. I want at least 10 that's all I ask for :)

Poems are the poor stepchildren of literotica. It's excruciating trying to get 10 votes. You can try begging. We all do it around here. Sometimes, it works. ;)

Here's a thought
when your stories get feedback
reply and say
check out my poems and vote
they're hot!

It's worth a try......

and then there's always money;)

I've found that as well, even in the STC challenges with well over 10 folks.

You'd hope the authors would review the works of the other participants and vote, even if it's not all 5's.

But far far fewer readers for poems, so I appreciate the comments and votes (and the place to post them) I do get and leave it at that.

Hey, welcome to the club!

Mine often get stuck at 8. I consider that a, accepted poem, eight votes. I have a lot stuck at 5-6 that are not half bad.

I haven't been here long enough to speak from experience, but I'm old enough (and persnickety enough) to have an opinion.

There's a lot of things that go on with voting. Some folks comment, but never vote (according to them). Others vote, but dare not comment. A lot of folks do both, but change the rules for themselves each time.

I try to do both. But, I'm the first to admit that I can't (don't) read everything. In the short time that I have been here, I've discovered that I have missed poems whose strength and beauty are so strong that the poem sits with me for days. Why'd I miss them?

Honestly? It's usually a shitty title. (This should probably turn into another thread... oh well).

Like a lot of the folks that travel through this garden, my time is often limited. Offer me the chance to read a poem called "love" and I probably won't click on it. Why? Because there have been 6,789,371,209 poems already written with that title. My selfish reaction is "why read that... it's just going to be more of the same".

Right, wrong or indifferent, if a poet offers me a tired old title I'm probably going to miss their work. In turn, they miss my vote.

Want more votes? Along with campaigning for them, write better titles!

I've got a poem (Malt Shop Shadows), that like 6 others of mine is stuck at 9. (That's 1/3 of my total submissions... so I CAN commiserate!). One more vote of 4 or 5, and I'd get that nifty little "H". I truly believe that had I left the poem with the original working title of "Shadows", I wouldn't even have that many!

So, again: Want more votes? Write better titles!

But votes are not why I'm here. Don't get me wrong. I've got as big an ego as most folks. Like my stuff and give me a vote (or comment), and sure... I do a little dance. But I'm here for far more personal, selfish reasons.

This is an extraordinary community of poets of all forms, shapes and calibres. I have learned something for evey piece I have read. I've learned something everytime I have opened my mouth... to comment, or to offer a poem. I have learned and growen each time a poet offers to PM me, or exchange emails. With each of those little gifts, I become a better poet. Maybe it's finding that missing comma, or dropped word... maybe it's being reminded that I like a certain poem or line a little too much.

And each time that my fellow poets make me become a little better, I become a slightly better man.

By the way, please consider that last post to be an invitation to read my stuff and vote!

NOW the truth come out!!
hehehe

Tath, my New England compatriot... I see you already understand that dumbass truth: If you don't promote your own stuff, who's gonna?

The hard part is being plaintive without sounding like you're begging!

(I didn't sound too needy and whiney... did I?)

much easier than being needy eh??

Poems? I'd love to get some votes on my damn story.

Over eleven hundred views, and only seven votes. I think that means it must suck, but the votes have all been decent. Con-fyoo-zhun.

That said.

In almost every case, I don't care if you vote for my poetry - Most of it I don't consider good enough, because I still don't think I know enough about poetry writing to really nail a lot of my stuff down and I edit like a retarded monkey. Badly and with many stops to fling poop at people.

But what drives me NUTS is the people who vote one or two and don't stop and tell me why. If you hated it, great! Print it out on fine paper and wipe your ass with it, but tell my why, for god's fucking sake.

THAT said.

I have one poem with twelve votes that got one-bombed when it was sitting at 4.75-ish avg, at eight votes and dropped low enough that, at ten, it didn't get an H. Which made me want to punch myself in the face.

As for begging for votes...

not my style.

VOTE FOR MY STUFF OR I'LL GOUGE OUT YOUR EYES AND PEEL THEM LIKE GRAPES! THE SCLERA WILL PAINT MY FINGERS IN STICKY GOO AND YOU WILL SCREAM IF YOU DO NOT VOTE FOR MY POEMS! And I'll poop in your shoe.

Welcome to the Troll zone
there are people who, for whatever reason, see fit to go through and low ball, ie: 1 vote, anything that look like it may get an H'
Or, In my case, go through and low ball anything that Has an H
In the future I am thinking about eliminating the numeric voting and having comments only.
The H's are nice but in the end they are as temporary as someone's desire to take it away.

No one knows why they do it
Perhaps they have sexual issues and this is their way of feeling in control or pleasure.
or perhaps they are just unhappy selfish assholes who didn't get enough attention and can't understand why no one likes them.
personally I think they have sex with animals but I've as yet not found the link between behaving like a baboons ass and fucking one..

Most of the time I think it's based on jealousy or fear
As are most of the unpleasant things in the world.

Perhaps I should have some coffee huh??

Anyway
don't let the numbers control what you write
Go by comments always
if your poem is good people will let you know.

Good morning tath!
I think I'll join you in that cup of coffee!:)

Speaking of jealousy and fear based actions, have you read any of the inhumanity submissions?

There's some strong stuff there. May not need the coffee kick.

This thread parallels a similar plaint in the Author's Hangout, for us prose writers, that the ratio of views to votes seems poor. In an anally-retentive moment I did the calculations on my own work. Overall, over my 33 submissions (including my three poems, big hint!) I've amassed 8043 votes. These however have come from 1,387,527 views, about 0.58%!

Taking the poems in isolation, 25 votes total from 3518 views, a slight improvement to 0.71% :) One of my poems managed a giddy 11 eleven votes, but it was a silly sonnet written for the National Nude Day contest - it didn't qualify for the contest, but my Hangout colleagues rallied round and voted anyway. I have another poem with 10, but that's since April 2002. My only other poem managed 4 votes since posting on 15 July this year.

I've been around the site now for four years and it's always been the same. I guess we just live with it.

Not much we can do about the trolls either . . .

Thanks brother

...People do this on purpose? I thought they just didn't like my poem.

Death is too good for these people.
