Day 3.

How much lime do you cover the bodies with again?

Not so. Everything is going better than I expected. Yes, I still get the urge to have a smoke every so often. It helps if I keep busy.

The patches really help. I think the pills are starting to kick in.

The fuckers could have told me that I had to start taking them five days in advance of stopping.

I caught myself patting my shirt pocket to see if I had my smokes yesterday on the way out the door as well as glancing on top of the fridge to see how many packs of smokes I had left there.

Old habits die hard indeed.

My wife has made no mention of stopping smoking with me again.

No surprise there as she looked like a deer caught in the head lights when I informed her that I had enough patches for her too! :D

Have you found one side of your brain arguing with the other one over this?

Like:

"We're having a stressful day. We need a cigarette."

"No, we're quitting. We said we would. It's nasty and we need to."

"We can quit tomorrow. Let's just have one now and we'll start first thing in the morning - no more cigarettes."

I went through a week or so of this when I first quit. Maybe it's easier with a patch. Once you get past the second week mark you're pretty much home free.

Congratulations!!! I just hit 6 months smoke-free a few days ago. Feels great. I know you can do it! Keep it up! :D

I have one left but I'm already getting nervous. I know I'm stronger than this damn addiction.

Are you taking Zyban?

No! But, I do find myself wishing I had a smoke during the times I actually enjoyed smoking.

Like really inside windows running a program to find problems. Just after a good meal. Working on my story for Lit. on the drive home after work. After sex!

The way I see it, I smoked for thirty three years and it is going to take sometime to reprogram my brain.

I know about addiction. My biggest worry is eating so much I'll need all new clothes every month!

No, I quit. There is no going back. No half measures. No do overs.

Thanks!

I'll make it cause I'm sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Yes, Zyban for thirty days and it should start working in about THREE MORE days!

I'm also on the patch. 21Mg for seven days, 14 Mg for seven days, & 7 Mg for seven days.

How long and how much have you been smoking?

About a pack a day ( +/- the type of day I'm having) for about 20 years.

I was on Zyban at one time and did fairly well with it. It made me feel energized and the last thing on my mind was a cigarette. Then I went through a major catastrophe and started smoking again.

I'm going to just go for it, without any help, and see how I do.

Good luck to you.

I smoked for thrity-four years. Pall Malls, too. When you do re-program your brain you will find out how truly easy it is to quit. It really is. Don't worry about getting fat. You won't gain more than ten or fifteen punds. The trick is that you MUST understand that the world is NOT defined by the lack of cigaretts. Instead you must come to define yourself as a non-smoker: No big deal. You just don't smoke. When you can do that you can pretty much forget about the damn things. Really. I know it sounds crazy to say it's no big deal to quit, and I sure never believed it, but it is true. Please remember at all times--You aren't a smoker. It' isn't that you were once a smoker and now have quit: It is that you aren't a smoker. You just don't smoke. Some do, some have, but you don', so now you won't.

Great thread. I'm aiming to quit on Friday (I had quit for 6 months but fell off the wagon two weeks ago... never think just one is ok).

I'll be following this thread eagerly to see how you are doing and hopefully gain some motivation.

I hear ya!

Nothing irritates me more than someone asking me how many cigarettes I've smoked today. My wife did that too today.

My answer...What are you talking about? I quit Sunday or rather Saturday night when I went to bed. There is no firing one up. Hello!! I don't smoke anymore.

When you quit something you quit. ANYTHING ELSE is not quiting.

dude, congratulations! i always find day 3 the hardest, along with the one month mark.

as they say, it's a habit to check your pocket or wherever you used to stow them. my wife only smokes when we drink, whereas i only do while working or at the office. i'm OK w/ not smoking after sex, but after a nice meal or while driving, that's very, very hard.

i do periodically have the smeagol/gollum dialogue lavared mentioned when i'm trying to cut down, though. :>

smoker

i had sex with a girl at work...but...she was a heavy smoker.when she kissed me it was like tasting the bottom of a dirty old ash tray!!YUK!..it really was awful & horrible..it put me off going with her again..surely thats enough to put anyone off smoking..the stink & taste is disgusting..i feel sorry for pretty non-smoking girls who have to endure this awful dilema :(

Hell yeah! That's exactly how I felt. Hey, if you need some inspiration, support, or you want to study up on what is happening to you body as you quit, I highly recommend this link. I don't think I could've made it through the first few weeks w/o it. It's very cool.

I quit three years ago using zyban and replacing the oral fixation with dum dums , then tooth picks, still using the toothpicks lol.
I found the whole thing easier than I thought. I think the main think was making up my mind to do it and then removing smoking as an option. That way I didn't have that conversation in my head. I usually lose those.
Keep going, you can do it.

I like your attitude Fbarvb. You'll do fine.

I quit smoking eleven years ago and it was one of the smartest decisions I ever made - got out before cigarettes went up over a dollar a pack.

I'm starting to wish I had quit using gasoline at about the same time. It's smelly and expensive too!

I'm puffing on a La Gloria Cubana Serie R. Maduro cigar as I write this.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Would you believe this asshole (He knew that I had stopped smoking) offered me a Marlboro today.

Yeah, held the pack out and asked me if I wanted one.

That's OK, what goes around, comes around. I have a long memory for such things.

I'm going to need a deeper lime pit.

congrats, fgarvb1... i quit snuff a few months ago and am well aware (like the others) of how difficult it is. you're over the hump though. good job.

Yeah I used to have people did that to me. I got to where I'd say "sure give me one". Then I'd break it in half and throw it away. They quit offering.

Heeheee. That's a good one!

The smoking ban here is great. I can go to a pub or resteraunt without coughing up a lung. I hate smoking. Can never understand why people do it. My current flatmates all smoke in the house though. I can't wait to move out of here. It really burns my eyes. They're quite sensitive after I had laser treatment. Well done to all of you who quit. :)

I smoke the CAO Mx2 Belicosos all of the time. I tend to prefer a larger gauge full bodied cigar. But, now that you've brought it to my attention, I'm going to buy a CAO L'Anniversaire eXtreme Belicoso in the morning (there is a fine tobacconist with a nice walk-in humidor on the first floor of the building where I work.) By the by, I've never touched a cigarette a day in my life.

Good luck to you! You are doing one of the hardest things there is to do! I wish I had your will power!!
