Man arrested, accuses woman of having Satan's baby

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Thursday, July 03, 2008

PORT ST. LUCIE — A convicted rapist was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of stalking a woman with e-mails and text messages in which he allegedly accused her of having Satan's baby.

Charles Michael Phillips, 51, had been communicating with the Port St. Lucie woman over the Internet and for days had been barraging her with bizarre phone and e-mail messages and calling her, according to police.

During five days, Phillips had sent her 22 text messages, the woman told police. He had called her 40 times at her cell phone in two days, she said.

The woman said she started to become frightened of Phillips after he told her he had been accused of a rape. After confirming that he was a sexual predator, the woman became "terrified," an arrest report states.

On Monday, police contacted Phillips and told him to stop communicating with the woman. But he kept sending the woman messages anyway, police said.

"You know who this is, at least you should know, I'm not going to come over to your house, Satan would do something to ruin that," Phillips said in a phone message, according to the report. "I love everyone, but right now I love you, let's just keep trying."

"Satan fathered your child and you are forgiven," he said in another message, according to police.

Phillips also allegedly talked about a drummer from the 1980s hair band Poison who Phillips said was cleared of rape charges.

Then Phillips, who was under house arrest, left a Poison CD on the woman's doorstep, police said.

Phillips was deemed a "sexual predator" by a judge after being convicted of raping a 21-year-old Port St. Lucie woman at knifepoint in 1994.

He also was accused of following eight women, keeping a diary of their daily routines and other personal information.

Most of the women had no idea that Phillips, a former lawyer and a captain in the Marine Corps, was watching them.

Days after the rape, Phillips allegedly walked into the Riverside National Bank on U.S. 1 in Port St. Lucie, wearing a long, red wig and handed a teller a note demanding money, police said at the time. A teller handed some money over to him, police said, but several men in the bank tackled him on his way out.

Phillips was arrested on bank robbery charges, and investigators linked him to the rape case days later while searching his home for evidence to use in the bank robbery trial.

The bank robbery charges later were dropped.

Phillips was in prison for nearly 10 years before moving back to Port St. Lucie in 2003, where he had been living with his mother at 774 S.E. Essex Drive.

In 2005, Phillips was under house arrest when he absconded to New York. Police tracked him down to a hotel and he was jailed. Phillips returned to Port St. Lucie last year.

Phillips was booked into the St. Lucie County jail on Wednesday and faces charges of violating his parole and stalking.

You know I'm a pretty soft touch. But this loon should not be wandering free. He's crazier than a snake's armpit.

the rape part is terrifying, but the implicit threat in calling her child Satan's baby is what is truly disabling.

I hope they lock him up.

I found the bit about "formerly a lawyer and a U.S. Marine Captain" somewhat disturbing as well, but I suspect I do not really want to know what happened with that.

I wonder if there is a lesson in here for the inability of any "criminal justice" system to deal effectively with insanity. The concept of a “punishment as deterrent” system just is not appropriate for someone convinced some woman is having Satan's baby.

And while I am pissing people off, I might as well note that for a society that ostensibly believes in God and the Devil, I find it curious that those who profess to hear and follow God's voices are immediately (and correctly) deemed to be loony.

But then, being an atheist, I would think that.
