but it is weird.

For some reason, my latest story has collected a dozen new votes in the last 24 hours.

None of them one bombs either, I think.

Usually the votes pile up in the first week, then about two a month from then on.

Well, as I said, I'm not complaining.

maybe you've been selected

Perhaps the story has been honored by being selected to be stolen by another writing site!

Nah. I'm being too paranoid again.

There are a lot of Halloween stories. Maybe that's caused an anomalous reading spurt, as people look them over.

It's not paranoid to think a story might be stolen by another site. Such theft is quite common. I have been checking over my stories and I find that about half of them have been stolen. When I have finished, I will contact Laurel about it. :(

Well, if the actual story was stolen to another site, you'd not get any views and votes for it on Lit.

If they are linking to your story from another site...rejoice, brother. Correct me if I have missed anything, but isn't that a good thing?

Yeah, I'm jealous.

#L, whose stories doesn't even reach 10 votes.

:( When a story is referred to as having been "stolen" it doesn't mean the actual bytes and bits making up the characters on Lit. have been removed without permission. It doesn't mean that another site is directing their patrons to Lit. either because nobody would complain about that. It means the other site has copied the story and is probably charging readers to access it. This theft is a violation of the copyright laws, rather than the laws dealing with larceny. If you checked, you would probably find that some of your stories have been stolen the same way.

Edited to add: I don't really know why this should bother me because I'm not actully losing anything. If another site steals a story and charges to read it, I feel I should get a piece of that charge but if it isn't stolen, I don't make anything either.

Um, yeah, I know those things. This is exactly what I said.

Read my post again, will ya, before bouncing off the walls. A stolen story is someone taking your intellectual property, i.e publizing your work without your permission. This is immoral and illegal.

And when they do, it is not reflected in the views and votes that you get on Lit. So this is NOT what happened in the case of RG.

What most likely happened in the case of RG is that someone somewhere put up a hyperlink to RG's story. This is what the web is all about, and I would be flattered if someone liked my stories anough to recommend them to others this way.

Edited to add: I don't really know why this should bother me because I'm not actully losing anything. If another site steals a story and charges to read it, I feel I should get a piece of that charge but if it isn't stolen, I don't make anything either.
If I put time and effort into inventing an ingeniuos machine, and then someone comes by, copies my blueprints and makes a shitload of money on my idea, I'd be pretty upset. That's what Intellectual Property is all about. The time and effort put into it by you, and the prospect for payoff.

If someone's put up a hyperlink, I wish they had asked me first.

One of my other other stories is hyperlinked and the owner of the site did ask. I had no problem with that.

Didn't think of that though people. Time to do a little web surfing.

One of my stories once exibited this behaviour and I discovered a link from a (free) site to that story. I sent a cease and desist e-mail and they ceased and desisted.

Now I really wish I hadn't. That site was free and not negatively affecting Lit at all and it was getting me a hell of a lot of reads. However I was a little snotty in the way I phrased my c&d, so the option of backtracking is gone forever. Bugger.

Bask in it mate, if it has been nicked by another site, hardly likely to be a pay site directing people to a free site like Lit, soak up their votes. Several of my blurbs have been nicked and advertised elsewhere, not being in any way a serious author I find it a compliment, but it is a fucking cheek all the same, still as long as they keep including the right authors name.

Which I took to mean "If your story disappeared, nobody would view it and/or vote on it", which rather goes without saying.

I just write for the fun of it and to read the feedback, which is also fun. It would be nice if I could make some money out of it but I don't expect any. I doubt if the pirate sites are making a lot of money out of any of my stories but I wish they'd give me a cut of what they do make.

One of my stories, "David and His Dildo" is being used as advertising copy on a site that sells sex toys. That doesn't bother me but I do wish they would pay me for it.

Ah. I see. Well, when intellectual property (stories, music, programming code et al) gets "stolen" we're actually talking about unauthorised copies. What is stolen is not your actual bytes on the Lit server, but your right to choose where to publish it.

You know that someone is publishing your stuff on their site without permission, and makes money off it? Bring on the blowtorch! I would.

Really? Most sites and online artists like us that I know of are happy for all the free advertising they can get.

One of my jobs right now is to cruise the net in search of interresting content, which I then review and link to in a newsletter. I can't possiblöy ask for every IP owner's permission.

I mean, haven't you ever posted a link here in the forum to some news item, flash game, or something like that. Did you ask the maker of the thing first? :)

I am currently in the process of researching to email or PM Laurel. It's a time-consuming chore because I have a lot of stories posted.

I would have no problem with somebody having a hyper-link to my stories. All my posts on these threads include a shortcut to them and I have started including an URL to readers who express interest in reading more of my stories.

You're quite right Liar. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.

Did some digging. It doesn't look like my story is linked anywhere.

Oh well, it's really not that important.

Rg, I don't know whether this is the answer or not but it is a possibility.

When you bring up a story catagory on the Story Index page, at the top it lists "Story Spinner" which is supposed to give you a random selection from the selected catagory.

It is my understanding that instead of those selections being truly random, they are selections from a rotator list and that when your story is in the rotator list it gets more views.

That was explained to me at some time and could be wrong. Perhaps others know more about it.

It has been my experience that stories that are linked into from other sites do not get votes or comments. Not to sure about the votes though because mine are turned off.

Although the sites that have used my stories have been respectful, it still bothered me a bit that they were, essentially, profitting off my work. Then again, so does Lit. I wish my writing were good enough for me to profit.

The worst thing about the last story that got linked was that it was so horribly researched. Since I wrote it, I have stumbled on a lot more information. It's embarassing. I have learned to google every possible keyword.
