I tend to pick up trash where ever I go. It doesn't matter if I'm diving or walking down the street. In fact I watch for it, you never know what you're going to find.

When I'm diving I carry a mesh bag for the trash I find. Everything from fishing line to beer cans go in the bag. Things like lead weights, lures and other goodies go into a pocket of my vest. (I have found more than a few neat things diving. Everything from several masks to a dive computer to half a dozen knives including a great Titanium Dive Knife.) The lead weights go into a bucket at home and have for quite some time.

When I'm walking around the area I carry a trash bag and pick up the shit I come across. I have found a lot of good things like knives and tools on the side of the road. I have also found some nasty things like a handgun and more than a few Hypodermics. (The handgun was left in place and the police called.) I have added to my collection of knives doing this as well. One thing I find a lot of are the little lead weights used to balance car tires. They get slung off and end up on the side of the road. I pick those up and put those in my pocket. When I get home the trash is deposited in the can and the lead weights have their steel clips removed. The lead goes in the bucket and the clips go in the trash. (I have also on two occasions found partial rolls of lead flashing, that goes in the bucket as well.)

Every time the bucket got full I pulled out the smelting gear. A wooden box that gets filled with sand. Into the sand is pressed a square mold that will hold five pounds of lead. A Blowtorch and a good sized Crucible. I would set things up and start melting the lead. When I had melted enough I poured it into the mold and left it overnight to cool and set. It usually takes a couple of rounds to empty the bucket. The blocks of lead were stored in the back shed.

The other day I decided I had enough to sell and started calling around. I found several dive shops that wanted lead. (They use it to make Dive Weights.) I set up apointments and started loading the car. I made sure not to overload the car for each trip.

Now you have to understand I've been collecting this for a couple of years. I had 100 five pound blocks and made $250.00.

Now it's back to collecting more.
