OK. Let me quickly dispense with the obligatory poetry stuff: Do something poetical about New York City here. Write a poem, cite a poem, think about a poem, whatever.

Now.

The wyf and I is traveling to our country's largest city next week for some R&R. So, wrong coastal persons, what should we do? I mean besides flirting with cardiac arrest at the Carnegie Deli and checking out yer excellent art museums. And maybe a Yankees game, if they're in town and we can get tickets. The Strand Bookstore. Brooklyn Bridge (the mate's a photographer and I am the son of an engineer, so I really want to do that). Yeah, yeah, Statue of Liberty.

What else is interesting, knowledgeable ones?

I'm am open to suggestion. Why I is axing. :)

I've met many New Yorker's
along the coastal trails
from
Yonkers, Brooklyn, upstate
and back
they all make Floida the retirement
track...

Upper West Side

My favorite part of Manhattan, it has beautiful tree-lined avenues of brownstones, kitschy shops, great restaurants and, between W. 71 and 74th Sts you can stroll into Central Park and see Strawberry Fields and the Imagine mosaic. Then look up through the trees, you'll see the Dakota, where the Lennons lived. Sigh...

Ooh a NYC poem... I can do that!

but for now, oh damn there is a great little italian place, quirky, a bit crazy, yummy and um.... yummy and the people very friendly. It is on Mulberry Street (as if that narrows it down at all!) but I would highly recommend it (once I remember the name) I also enjoyed walking Chinatown markets.

Just go hungry!

Bagels. What I would not give for a REAL bagel. I have not had one in almost a year.

LA MELA

go keeping in mind that you will be there for hours. It is family style. Fun fun fun.

Up here in Maine, the most popular bagel is Blueberry. Blueberry! Yknow I understand that Maine blueberries are great and all, but a bagel? That's just wrong.

Tzara needs to go to Tal Bagels (Broadway between 90th and 91st Sts). The best bagels in NYC. Really. Bialys to die for. Maybe he'll send us some. I want an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and a bialy. And maybe a mushroom knish. Anna, what are you having? ;)

I was going to write a poem about the Fulton Fish Market in Lower Manhattan, but i googled it and it's moved to the Bronx...

Why wasn't I told ? I'm sure there's a flower market though, and probably a produce market that would be great to visit....anybody know the whereabouts ?

While there... see a Broadway show. The big ones may be sold out but even the smaller productions are really an experience. You can also get some last minute deals right before a show starts if you move fast.

I actually saw one, years and years and years ago. Evita, in one of Patti LuPone's last performances. I was sitting so near the back that I was the designated Civil Defense representative for the band. I even knew where the fire escape was! I even had extra keys!

Kids burrow like a rabbit warren. It's what they do. They are usually OK.

She's very talented.

New York huh?
I can write a poem about A-Rod and strippers......

I've never been to there, have very little desire togo...I'm not a fan of "cities" in general
If I did go, yeah the Brooklyn Bridge, Strawberry Fields, and Ground Zero

Oh and sure Ange, complain about the bagels, no complaints when they put those blueberries in muffins, or pancakes, or waffles, or ice cream or jam....
:D

Hmmph. He couldn't pick a city I've been to. Like Paris or Istanbul or, heav'n forbid, that Canuck one, Tranna. I'd love to write a poem or tell you <evilgrin=on> where to go. </grin> Maybe, I'll forego the truth and make something up...

Cut that out, you! I was not complaining about the blueberries. . .well, only when they stick em in bagels. If they'd just keep them in the pancakes everything would be fine. :p

I am not a 'city' person and I loved NYC. :)

Were you there recently? If so, I envy you. And I love the pics. Your photo of the Brooklyn Bridge reminded me that there's a marvelous restaurant in Brooklyn that sits right as the bridge entrance, The River Cafe. Tzara you must check it out if you've never been there. The view of the Manhattan skyline from there is stupendous. They have outside tables and it's all lit up with fairy lights at night.

I was there in the spring following 9-11. It's a great place to take pics. Although after a few days, my camera was confiscated by my friends when I insisted they wait while I took 'a few more' of some rocks in central park. It was raining. When I mentioned the light on the ducks in the pond there was shrieking and swearing.

We took the subway to Brooklyn and then walked back to Manhattan. It was by far my best experience in the city. That, and watching the Yankees play the Mets at Shea. Didn't watch much baseball...just the fans in the stands yellin' at each other. ;)

ee has promised to take me to a Red Sox game before we move from Maine. I'm used to seeing games in NYC or Philly where the fans are, well, you could as likely be at a mass mugging as a ball game lol.

I'm thinkin' those Boston Dudes might be right up their with NYC and Philly for psychotic behaviour centered around a small ball and a stick but don't tell Tath I said that. ;)

He was at the game yesterday. I kept looking for him. Didn't see him, but I could swear I heard chimp sounds during the seventh inning stretch. :D

I think that's his call for more beer. ;) If he rubs his belly at the same time that means he wants a hot dog too.

No, Silly...a smile, wave and topless-ness gets you a hot dog and a drink.

it gets me disgusted looks and threats of arrest or bodily harm with a harpoon.

In your letters, you assured me that New York was like the map of my desire, only larger, straighter. I saved that image in a corner of my eye, kept it serene and available. I foresaw that I would have to use it, if not to find you, maybe to recover from the unknown spectre of the light, from the imponderable fables of the architecture, and from the abstract web of the women in high heels. I could always foresee the footsteps of a woman in high heels.
