NON-RACISM IN MEMPHIS:“Black students at the University of Memphis hanged from a tree a piñata made to look like a white woman, and took turns beating it with a stick. A photo of the incident has been making the rounds on the internet, and the university had to issue a statement about it this week.”

Black students at the University of Memphis hanged from a tree a piñata made to look like a white woman, and took turns beating it with a stick. A photo of the incident has been making the rounds on the internet, and the university had to issue a statement about it this week.

Was it a racist act? No, turns out it wasn’t intended that way at all. Just some kids having fun at a party.

But imagine if the racial dynamics had been reversed — white students beating a black piñata hanging from a tree. I think we can all be grateful that wasn’t the case.

Sometimes a piñata is just a piñata.

Not Racism

These days racism is everywhere, even if no one can define it. Sometimes we don’t even know it when we see it. Is this racism?

A piñata shaped like a white woman was strung up to a tree at the University of Memphis, then African-American students took turns beating it with a stick.

The answer:

No, actually it isn’t. Turns out the students involved were mere grade school kids, brought on campus for a special “Luau” party sponsored by the university. The piñata was supposed to represent a hula dancer.

Now imagine someone stringing up a black piñata so that white kids could beat it with a stick.
