Nominations: The Top 5 Poems

Some of my favorites

No particular order.

When I read poetry, I want to hear the poet’s voice clearly and enjoy his definitive style. Poetry is difficult to write. I look for effort and skill. Erotic poetry is even more challenging. I’m not interested in reading “I want to fuck you and make you come” especially if the writing equals that of a bad, mindless porn video. Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy my smut, but we’re not rabbits; we’re complex human beings. I want to see some evidence of that in artistic expressions.

Eroticism encompasses so much more than sexual arousal. It is about sensuality, sexual intimacy and sometimes, sexual love. Like UP, I follow poet’s work. I tend to read their entire collections. We all miss the mark at times. A fair assessment is to study and observe a poet’s work over time and several readings.

I could have included more poems. I chose these for their range, clarity, beauty.

Ann Shimura by Otzchiim

The setting is fresh. The form is solid. The imagery is lasting. If you’d like an example of a modern, erotic spin on the sonnet, you’ll enjoy this poet’s work.

Bolero by Sa Storm
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=30396

Sa Storm is new on the scene. It’s not difficult to recognize a poet who is well read, knowledgeable, and talented. I was most impressed with the construction. The poem is sensual and rhythmic. It draws in the reader easily. I’m a sucker for poetic devices and Storm’s use of repetition works for me.

Athletic Discipline by RisiaSky
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=23067

Risia is another poet who clearly puts focused effort and thought into her writing. I enjoy the complexity of this poem. This poem isn’t just about wanting to get off. She examines what motivates us. Again, effective use of metaphor. Poetic devices provide another level of enjoying a work.

Pantoum by HomerPindar
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=25882

Homer is one of the best writers of traditional forms on this site. The pantoum’s form is a good fit with eroticism. The refrains in this form are seductive and inviting. Homer creates tension and anticipation in this read. He easily arouses the reader.

Longness of Liz by smithpeter
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=25882

smithpeter’s modern sensibility and style are refreshing. His poetry reflects our times and attitudes.
He believes in economy of words. We have always been keenly aware of the impact of words, but the modern weaver seems to be even more discriminate. SP’s language is crisp, lean and direct. I like how he uses language.

I want to kiss you while you scream by rnabokov
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=30474

Kick ass title. I have had the good fortune of previewing other works by this poet. He has a definitive style and with time, his work will not only be enticing, but more refined. R’s strength lie in his imagery and metaphors. I enjoy show he shapes images and invokes emotions.

Looking forward to reading others' choices.

Peace,

daughter

Outstanding

Well done Daughter!

I am trying to pare down my current favorites to 5.

Fun idea, Nessus!

There are a great many excellent poems available here, and there's no way I could list all of those that I enjoy and admire. So, this is in no way a comprehensive list, even of my own personal favorites.

In no particular order, here are my current top 5:

she, the Stradivarius by WriterDom:
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=7879
While I enjoy much of his work, I think this one makes optimal use of his characteristically elegant simplicity. The motif of the musical instruments carries a good deal of the imaginative weight, creating a parallel between the dances of love and the vibrations of instruments.

Afterglow by Thesandman
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=17373
I think the meter and rhyme flow very well, and the poem captures something elusive about that lingering feeling of love and connection in the wake of intense sexual passion. There's passion, tenderness, and a kind of thrumming exhaustion throughout.

Oral Exercises by Havocman
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=5278
Never underestimate an oldie but goodie. I liked this poem so much, I wrote "Fixation" in response. The imagery flows so smoothly, the twist ending really does surprise. And that surprise encourages the reader to realize just how much of arousal is about the mind and imagination.

Lilacs & Lemons by daughter
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=27267
While she's relatively new to poetry, and still finding her stylistic voice, this poem stands out as exceptional. The heartbreaking instability of love and lust comes through with emotion and imagination, and the extended metaphor reworks conventional cliches about the fleeting nature of emotional attachment to great effect. All that in a brief two stanzas.

HIV + by CRaZy
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=13250
This is perhaps the single best Non-Erotic poem on this site. Both a eulogy and a lonely survivor's lament, it compresses the gut-wrenching emotion of losing someone you love to the devastation of AIDS into a handful of stanzas. In less than a page, you get a clear sense of the development and long duration of a relationship, which only serves to underscore the powerful anger, guilt, loss, loneliness, and despair felt by those who survive their tragically young loved ones.

OMG Risia - thanks for mentioning my poem. Smilez. You made my day.
