Nobody cares about the Uyghurs

So a wee kerfuffle erupted when a minority owner of the Golden State Warriors said "Nobody cares about what's happening to the Uyghurs, okay. You bring it up because you really care, and I think it's nice that you really care, the rest of us don't care,"

And...he's 100% correct (avoiding being pedantic about 'nobody'). The Uyghurs (pronounced wee-gers) are being systematically eliminated by China. No one cares. Were things to be judged, this genocide should take precedence over a whole lot of issues, like caring about Hamas et al, but, as pointed out, no one cares about the Uyghurs.

Hilariously, shortly afterwards the GSW released a statement distancing themselves from his remarks, but scrupulously avoided mentioning whether or not they care about the Uyghurs.

no one should care

they are muslims and being treated as they should be

enemies of teh state

The Brits, the Australians and the New Zealanders have made themselves unpopular with Beijing for objecting to China's treatment of the Uighurs. So has Turkey, which has the largest concentration of Uighurs outside China.

Not even the Taliban cares about the Uighurs. Now that they have mineral wealth to sell, they're more concerned with making a profitable deal with the PRC than with protecting fellow Muslims.

People don't care about them because they aren't one of them.

Didn't know there was any concentration of Uighurs outside China -- but they are a Turkic group, so I guess Turkey would be a place to go.

I already ran a thread asking what the U.S. can do for the Uighurs. Most who responded said they didn't care, it's not our biz, and nobody had any constructive suggestions.

It isn't that I don't care...but who am I? What can I do to change the narrative? The only way to help requires a Government that is willing to do something. That will never happen in the US. Neither Party cares

I care about China destroying "incompatible" cultures for the whole world to get poorer through that. With obligatory remark about Tibet. Also, if it can be used to sow dissent or insurgency within China it should be used however possible.

Then, on other hand, when I contemplate what I really think on the exact case, they actually treat them exactly how all muslims anywhere probably should be. I would be very interested in their practical results for that matter.

So I'm kinda conflicted.

The "practical results" they apparently are aiming for are to make the Uighurs indistinguishable from Han Chinese.

It's kinda like the phase in American history when young Native Americans were sent to boarding schools whose motto was, "Kill the Indian, save the man!"

Yeah, I know. And usually it doesn't quite work and sometimes backfire later on.

Worked well enough for the U.S. -- the Indian nations have been permanently broken as military powers, and don't amount to much as political lobbies.

Canada denounced the little fuckers too calling it a genocide. I wish we would boycott the olympics and kick out all the chinese that are here on work permits or schooling permits.

Fuck china.

China is ripping itself apart. I expect it to become two or more nations in the next few decades. The Uyghurs are one of many ethnic minorities who may become majorities in new nations. If it doesn't split, China will at least have a dynasty change.

In 2001, Gordon Chang predicted China's collapse by 2011, but it does not look any nearer now than then.
