yeeeeehaaaaa! Just wanted to let all of you know that Texas is having its second annual "No Tax Weekend". That's right. We can buy clothes, shoes and other shit all weekend long without paying taxes on them. Thank you Governor George W. Bush. :)

Have you thanked Bush for all the children in the state of Texas who don't have any form of health care at all? Oh, that's right, I forgot: He swore not to leave any child behind.

Yeah. And that convention in Philadelphia wasn't anything more than an infomercial. I'm sorry. I just clean forgot what a good and brave man Bush was. I sure am glad he joined the National Guard to keep the Viet Cong out of Houston. How brave! Why, the man must have balls the size of canteloupes to meet Charlie in head-to-head combat over the blue skies of Texas.

Shitcan the praise for Bush. I've lived in Texas; he hasn't done that great of a job. Unless, of course, you were white and rich--in which case you made out like a bandit.

I'm sorry, did I hear you say that the children of Texas didn't have any health care. Shit that means that all that money I've been paying everymonth for my kids health care has just been pissed away. That's a load of bullshit. My kid has great health care and any kid in this great state can get health care. By the way I don't see anything bad that George has done.
Bush has also given the teachers of the this state a raise so that the good ones will stay on board. That in turn helps the children of this great state.

At least he served in some branch of service and didn't run away to smoke pot and then say "I didn't inhale".

I could only dream for a no tax weekend. As for health care we are pretty lucky in Canada so far. It's not great but better then in U.S.

I can agree with you there.

What makes you think the national gurad was a way to stay out of Vietnam? I served with both National Guard and Reserve units in Vietnam.

At least he didn't move to England for "schooling" or head for Canada.

I hate to dispel illusions, but there are a lot of families in Texas with little or no health care, not to mention food, shelter, etc. I work retail, so tax free weekend is a pain in the ass for us, but it is only for 3 days. I wish some of that budget overage that George Jr. says we have would go to improving the mental health system, teachers are still horribly underpaid in Texas & at least in the DFW Metroplex, they are leaving in droves. 1/3 of the part time people in my store are teachers who are working 2 jobs to make ends meet. The best & brightest young people are not going into education as a career field. The teen pregnancy rate here is one of the worst in the country. I love Texas, but we have a lot of areas where that money could be better spent.

A little discussed fact about wealth in Texas is due to the Bush Family - Silverado Savings and Loan (Brother Neil's outfit) and other S&L failures that resulted in a massive welfare bailout to the state of Texas. When the feds decided to bail out the good folks in Texas over this Reaganomics-created disaster, the other 49 states saw a good chunk of cash flow south. A little cash infusion from your brethren isn't going to hurt any.

I don't harbor resentment against Texas for this - only against the Bushes and others who are born on third base and think they hit a triple. The reality is that there isn't a dime's worth of difference whether you are cashing your welfare checks in a three piece suit or in hand-me-downs.

Some rob with guns, some with a fountain pen.
- Woody Guthrie, sorta, I believe.

We have state tax free on clothing here, all the time. It is up to the individual counties to decide whether to have county tax. Our's chose to. I think they meant well. But,
I am in retail, very involved in the retail trade. It has NOT increased sales and revenue at all. In fact, sales, overall, are down. All across the board. Except the internet. That's a whole other thread.
Anyways. Enjoy the tax free while you can. That's how ours started, just a week here and there. Now it's permanent.

Another note, A plea to everyone dealing with sales help. Please remember, we are people too. Over worked and under paid, but not your servants. Yes, I know you will meet up with idiots in the retail market. But that's because it pays poorly and you are woefully overworked. No, it isn't always easy, not always fun, though it can be. But remember, that every time you yell at us, bitch at us, complain to us, you are the 100th person that day that did it. Yes, we are minimum wage workers, for the most part, but that doesn't mean we are slaves to you. Jump here, and jump there and give it to me free because I had to wait in line.
Oh, and keep your kids in line!!! I truly believe that the main reason I chose to never have children is that I see them at their worst. In the malls, unsupervised, over tired, over stimultated and yelled at by tired, harassed Moms. Or worse yet, allowed to run wild and free. Breaking merchandise and putting themselves, and others at risk. We are not babysitters either.
Back to the topic. This especially occurs when a special sale is going on. Please, do us and yourselves a favor. Leave them home. Let a neighbor watch yours while you shop, and then she can shop while you watch hers.
Okay, sorry. Hope no one actually read this. I got all rambly and huffy.
Please forgive me. Will go hide now.

Oh, Merelan, don't hide. I feel exactly the same way! I worked in a book store for a few years, and saw the most hideous things! I won't tell them, but people treat store clerks horribly. Not to mention the bad behavior of their children. ugh!

I have worked in both Retail and the food service, trust me retail is nothing compared to food, do people think that fast food means instant or what? honestly though i think the big scary bikers i work with now are more well behaved than some of the customers i have experienced.

OOoooh all this political rage...

No society is perfect. It's really easy to yell "ITS HIS FAULT!!! HE'S SUCH A CRAPPY GOV/PREZ/MAYOR/STREETSWEEPER!! THE CHILDREN ARE SUFFERING!!! DOWN WITH PENGUINS!!! EAT MORE CHICKEN CAUSE THE WHOPPERS ARE AN ENDAGERED SPECIES!!!" Hell, I do it all the time. I like to hang out at the PX and say something snide about gun control. They called the MPs to stop the fight last time. I'm gonna do more to help my community and my country than blather on as usual and amuse myself by starting fights with the "hot topics". I don't take my old jackets/blankets/whatever to the salvation army or garage sales, I take them to homeless shelters. If I can get the state to overlook my whole epilepsy thing, I'm gonna adopt some kids. Gov. Bush may be responsible for the kids in TX not having medical care, dunno, don't live in texas, too clausterphobic (just kidding sheesh). But the rest of us are responsible for the kids all over for not having homes.

So, in summary, I submit to you, that you should eat more whoppers cause Mel Gibson was sooooo adorable in Chicken Run, you should never go to the PX just to start something, the MPs might show up, and I don't know bout ya'll, I'm voting for Bill and Opus. Opus is soooo sexy, it's the nose, makes you wonder if what they say about big noses is true.... conclusive photographic proof is welcome...

Okay -- where is the Meadow Party convention this year, and how can I be a delegate? We already know all of Bill's vices (remember his hot and heavy affair with Jeane Kirkpatrick) and Opus is a doll.

Ack . . . <Cough> . . . Ack!

Sure beats "They haven't led, we will."

I too miss Bloom County, but not as much as The Far Side! I don't know what I'll do if they ever stop recycling old Peanuts strips.

Yea we never pay taxes on clothing I live in pa and took the kids school shopping. We have never had to pay a tax on clothing. I can remember when we went in to California my parents telling us there is tax on clothing there. I just never had to it is something I guess we don't think about.

Healthcare here isn't the greatest but the government does help the ones in need .

Ok, I didn't mean for this to turn into a political debate. I do have to say a few things and then I will get off all the political bullshit.

First of all there is health care for children of families who can't afford regular health care.

Yes, I know that the teachers of Texas are still underpaid, but at least they have given them a much needed raise. It's a start.

The savings & loan scandal was many years ago (approx. early to mid-80's). I'm sure the man learned from that ordeal and has grown from his mistake. If we can excuse a president from running from the draft, smoking pot, using a cigar as a vibrator and then straight face lie to the american public about it, then I believe we can excuse Bush and his lil' fuck up with the savings & loan.

As for the homeless children and people in Texas. There is homeless people and children all over the U.S. We as a society need to spend more time helping out our own homeless people and less time with the ones in other countries.

I know that it sounds cruel, and please don't take me wrong on this if you live in another country. I will appoligize for that statement now. I'm sorry. I just think that each country needs to take care of there own first and then reach out and help the others. I mean shit, if we have such a bad problem with homeless people in our own country then how can we really expect to help another country out.

Hi Maniac, I totally agree with you about taking care of our own folks first. I am as sympathetic as the next person, some people tell me I am too sympathetic, but I just feel that too many children in our country are going without. Every state has its problems but in spite of ours, I love Texas. I have been in the DFW area for nearly 13 years & can't imagine living anywhere else.
