In my story "A Matter of Trust," the main character is a writer who finally finds his audience with an erotic story that becomes a weekly serial. A surprising number of readers have asked for that story but the title is too long (41 characters with spaces), even before adding the chapter info. If it ever gets beyond outline stage (where it's been languishing for well over a year), I'll be using part of the title for Lit publishing but putting the entire thing at the top of each chapter of the story. Someday...maybe...

Well, you can put a longer title at the top of the main story text page, and format it as separate.

e.g.,

Abbreviate, abbreviate, abbreviate. I have several were the title was longer than 35 characters.

It would have been "John Abernathy Adventures Ch. 01 - Aftermath" which is 38 characters. Now I'm sure Laurel would have fixed for me but the other four chapter were even longer. So, I shortened them to "JAA Ch. 01 - Aftermath" and did what you are doing is putting the full title in the body of the story.
